How many 1911s is too many?

Get ready to roll your eyes - this is one of those hand wringing threads where OP is asking for advice because he can’t make up his own damned mind like a man should - so if you don’t have the inclination to indulge me, nothing to read here.

I have an opportunity to pick up a 2021 Wilson Combat CQB Light-Rail Ambi-Safe Black AT .45ACP CA Approved at my FFL. It’s about $3,450 with tax but I have $900 in store credit.

Here’s the hand wringing part: I have four 1911s, all in .45ACP.

I’m talking myself into it with the argument that I can use it as a nightstand gun because of the light rail…but I already have a plastic wonder for that duty and, heaven forbid I ever have to actually use it, wouldn’t it be better to surrender a $600 gun to the police rather than a $3450 one?

The other considerations are: I was planning on picking up a 1911 in 9mm and if I was to get another in .45ACP I think I would prefer a Springfield Professional.

So, is there such a thing as too many 1911?

EDIT: I ended up passing on it and bought an IWI Galil Ace Gen 2 in 5.56.

Do you have 3 to 6 months of salary set aside for fiscal emergencies?

Are you using time or money as an excuse to not take training classes/shooting action pistol matches?

Gonna have to agree with Jesse on this one; are you being financially irresponsible for buying another 1911, is it going to permanently affect your relationships to the people in your immediate circle of friends/family/loved ones, etc, or is it a convenient excuse to buy another gun instead of sinking money into cases of ammo or training courses? Then no, that's not too many.

Personally I wouldn't buy that many, but that's also because I'm not a hardcore 1911 fan and that's me, not you. Already got two, and the only reason I might buy a third one is if I decide to deviate from .45 ACP and go down the .38 Super or 9x19mm rabbit hole with a 1911 and see how that fares.

I agree with what others have said so far so I will make this an easy decision for you. Depending on the condition of your modified Colt Commander, I will take that off your hands for $500 plus lunch on me. Now you will no reason to ponder this difficult decision. For me the answer is 3. One plus one duplicate or close enough to duplicate in case one breaks. Anything beyond that is a want not a need.

For me, I always upgraded my guns and sold off the inferior models. But that rule Does not apply to 1911s. Years ago I bought a pair of Sigs( P226&P220) to keep miles off my beloved 1911s.. that worked as these do the heavy lifting these days. But hey if you want it and spending the money won’t hurt you financially, go for it. High end guns in good shape do not loose money.

Question is irrelevant as there is no such thing as "too many" if you are a collector. Whatever floats your boat and you want to spend money on is all that matters if you collect 1911s or anything for that matter.

I collect Sigs, Berettas, and HKs. All that matters to me when I want another one is affordability vs how much I want it. If I can afford it and I really want it, I buy it. Nothing else really matters.

Problem I have with 1911s (my favorite pistol of all) is that the nicest one floats to the top and is the only one that gets taken to the range. So maybe unload one of the less-nice ones when you get the new best one? My best is a Baer TRP. Got rid of a Sig 1911, which was nice, but not Baer nice.
