Storage of Ohio handgun

CALGUNS.....You're my only hope...

Greetings from Dayton Ohio!

I hope you California folks can help me with a seemingly unanswerable question.

I'm a CCW holder from OHIO and live in OHIO. I am not a CA resident.

I'm taking a month's long road trip this summer and will bringing my firearm with me. Part of my trip may include driving to Cabo San Lucas. I can't take my firearm with me into Mexico.

On a Baja travel FB page I received many recommendations as to what to do with the firearm.

Here are some of the suggestions:
Leave it home - usually suggested by someone who is triggered by firearms
Bury it in the desert - surprisingly this seems to be the most logical option
Take it to FFL and have them store it - Called dealer and they said I'd have to be CA resident
Storage Locker - Only household goods lockers for rent, not gun sized.
Pawn Shop - Same problem as FFL
Find a friend to hold it - No friends along my intended route

Also called SDPD and they said the only way they could take possession is if they impound it and then I need to go through DOJ to get it returned.

Called Coronado Naval Warfare Center as I'm retired military and I thought I could store the firearm at the armory which I've done before. They said only members stationed there could use the armory.

Called CBP and they don't have storage options and don't know of anywhere for someone from out of state to store their firearm. In fact the agent I spoke to said it's the first time anyone has asked the question.

Called SD Sheriff and am awaiting a return call from a deputy but I'm not holding my breath.

I can't believe I'm the only CCW person in the US that wants to make a trip to Mexico and wants to safely and legally store their weapon on the US side of the border.

If this were just a trip to Cabo I'd leave my gun at home but this is a months long trip covering thousands of miles including many remote areas. I'll be going to Alaska too and I'd really like to have my weapon with me.

Any reasonable suggestions are welcome.

If it was me, I would ship it to my self (home) before going to Mexico. But then you wouldn't have the firearm on your return trip. Maybe just make the Cabo trip separately. Fly from your home airport to Cabo. Driving trip to lower 48 only. That way you can have your firearm with you, but you may not be able to CCW in some states you travel thru.

Of course you would have a similar problem if you are driving to Alaska thru Canada.

I’d say, if you can store it in NV or AZ, it might be easier thank dealing with CA bs.

Can’t CCW in CA anyways and useless while you’re driving here (locked container, etc).

Canada will let you transport a handgun as long as you declare it at the border and have the proper forms filled out and the barrel is at least a minimum length. It's for transport only, not to carry while in Canada. It looks like Arizona is my best bet.

^^ Try again that is FUD. No handguns or concealable firearms allowed in Canada. I stand corrected law changed in early 2021 canada website was not accurate it was in rcmp guidelines. Rent safe deposit box on way to baja pick it up on way out.

There are a few, but probably not too many left FFL's / brick-and-mortar gun stores that might have storage lockers for you to lock it up in while you go to Mexico. You would have to call around to check but I do remember someone here, with a gun store offering guns services, that offered that mentioned they did firearm storage at a reasonable price, but I think they were in a neighboring State.

And if you do call around make sure to mention your from out of state and your circumstances because that might affect their ability to offer storage to you.

They changed the law in 2021. I just read the new rcmp laws. 4" barrel minimum and25 or .32 caliber restricted. Rent a safe deposit box before entering mexico pick it up on way out.

Find FFL in Arizona to store it with.

Stick it in a rented locker in southern CA.

Don't bring the gun.

I commented above and I remembered where I saw one of the commercial members here " audiophil2 " mentioning they do storage in Arizona. It was in this thread which coincidentally was about a nonprofit organization trying to get gun stores all across the nation to offer storage for people in need, for any reason, like yourself or because of court cases or even something like depression and the gun stores will store your items no questions asked, for a fee.....

They might even be able to help you find something closer than Arizona here's their website and the thread where the whole subject came up...

Wouldn't a California home ffl or ffl service dealer be able to take it in for a cleaning/tune up?
