Firearms While Off Roading

Howdy!

I'm visiting CA in Aguanga CA. A buddy is meeting me and we're going to do some off-road exploring near Anza CA. I spent some time out there years ago and know where I want to head.

While googling for a place to target shoot "shooting near Anza" all that came up was a series of murders the past year or 2. Seven were murdered a mile from where I am and another right about where we planned on going....! Marijuana wars!

I'm not 100% comfortable taking this adventure without at least a locked and loaded 1911 in the 4x4 console but fear even off road this illegal in CA.

Please advise.

Without CCW a loaded handgun in the car is illegal anywhere in the state not on private property. Possession a loaded rifle in your vehicle is also illegal statewide even with a CCW, again unless on private property. If you pass into Anza Borrego State Park; LOADED FIREARMS AND HUNTING are not allowed in units of the State Parks System. Possession of loaded firearms or air rifles is prohibited. Exceptions are for hunting in recreation areas that have been designated by the State Park and Recreation Commission.

I've seen "packs" of "men" at a distance in the hills east of Tubac AZ with some sort of black guns and bundles....I'd still go out that way all the time...armed.

It is not legal to have a loaded firearm in/on a vehicle in CA.

Exemptions to this for a person with a valid CA LTC permit and the loaded handgun is listed on that permit.

There is a hunting and fishing exemption for carrying a loaded firearm, but likely wouldn't apply here, not only because they would be in a no-hunting, no-fishing area, but also because it wouldn't pass the smell test.

Somehow I just don't see what the 1911 has to do with it unless you wanted to let us know you had a 1911. Is that like a status symbol or....? I'd believe most would want something more reliable, less pretty and holds twice as many rounds if heading into the bush.

If you have a valid CA fishing license...
... it is legal to conceal carry an unloaded handgun while traveling to and from your fishing site.
... it is legal to conceal carry an unloaded handgun while fishing in an area that prohibits the discharge of firearms.
... it is legal to conceal carry a loaded handgun while fishing in an area that does not prohibit the discharge of firearms.

It is legal to open carry a loaded firearm or an unloaded firearm in an area where it is legal to discharge firearms.
It is legal to open carry an unloaded antique firearm.

Therefore...

This would be CA legal method of carrying, as a person with a valid CA fishing license and fishing in a place where it is legal to discharge firearms:
1. Exit residence and foot travel to vehicle = unloaded in locked container.
2. While in vehicle = unloaded in locked container.
3. Exit vehicle and foot travel to fishing site = unloaded conceal carry.
4. At fishing site, while fishing = loaded conceal carry.
5. Foot travel from fishing site to vehicle = unloaded conceal carry.
6. While in vehicle = unloaded in locked container.
7. Exit vehicle and foot travel to residence = unloaded in locked container.
