UPDATE. Anyone had USPS lose a long gun? If so, what is the next step?

I'm on the receiving end of an FFL to FFL transfer from Georgia to California on a rifle. It was a private party purchase. It's insured for the full value amount. It left the FFL 12 days ago. Priority and Insured. Tracking number shows it made it to the hub in Atlanta from the local Post Office. It hasn't moved since. I've filed a "lost package" claim. The post office is incredibly difficult to deal with. Impossible to speak with a real person on the pnone and two trips to my local P.O.'s all refer me back to the phone service.

If it turns out to be lost, I'm sure it will be somebody stole it. Do I have to report that to ATF? Does the FFL that packaged it have to report it? Thanks for any info.

PACKAGE CONFIRMED ARRIVAL at local P.O.! Loaded on truck for delivery. Now FFL shop just has to receive and confirm. Hope it's in one piece. Thanks to all for the links and info.

Are you an FFL? I thought only FFLs are allowed to ship firearms via USPS mail? If you are an FFL, maybe try asking this in the FFL forum?

I had one disappear at a Texas distribution center from usps. The atf found it in the office of one of the employees. I eventually got it but it was a headache.

I'm not an FFL....I purchased from a private party in GA...he took it to his FFL in GA and it was being shipped to my FFL here in San Diego.

How long did that take to find it? Then how long to get it?

I would start with the PD who oversee the hub...

Police showing up over a stolen firearm... its a good thing....

I recently had a package go missing that should have been delivered to my PO BOX.

I called the post office main #
            Reached the package issue area

Left my VM for a call back -
they called back in 2 hours - took a report
Really need to clarify that this is an internal theft....

As it is a firearm, I would get the PD involved.

USPS permits shipment of long guns by non-FFLs, but prohibits shipment of handguns by non-FFLs. That's the gist of it.

My mail has been lost or delayed.

If you have a tracking number, use the USPS Tracking System. You can also file a claim for the lost/delayed mail. Or call the U.S. Postal Service Domestic & International Tracking department at (800) 222-1811.

Sounds like the a-hole was stealing it.

Last November when the mail was super slow because of the faucivirus, I shipped a rifle to a gunbroker buyer. It got stuck in one place for about a week, and then another place for another week, but at least it moved in the interim. I think it ended up taking 3 weeks.

Filing the claim is about all you can do until you're convinced it's not moving. Seems like from the post above that ATF can motivate the USPS to get going, probably a good next step. No insurance?

Fully insured so I won't lose any money..but...It has a lot of sentimental value It's a rifle I sold 11 years ago to a member here and recently contacted. We worked out a deal and I am buying it back. Bummer if it goes permanently missing and ends up stolen.
