bay area gun storage options

are there any options of storing guns at like a range or a dealer's safe in the bay area?

I can store my handgun in my apartment but don't have the space (and don't really want to) get a larger safe to store a rifle that I want to get. so looking into different options on how to get a rifle but store it somewhere else.

i was reading that I might be able to store it in a self-storage unit (I have a unit already for some of my car things) but it doesn't seem ideal.

I live in a VERY small place and have a Fort Knox pistol box that I have bolted down to the floor for a couple handguns and a BARSKA rifle safe/cabinet for a couple long guns. Sure, it's not a heavy duty safe, but it's also not a flimsy cabinet and is very affordable. I have it bolted to the wall and the floor. It's stout and a great option for a small apartment. You could easily bolt this down inside a closet and out of the way. Much better option than storing the firearm offsite where it is of no use to you god forbid, you ever needed it. I'll buy a legit safe once I buy a house, but for now I'm happy with this BARSKA safe/cabinet.

Most self-storage units disallow firearms in the contract. Also, SB-894 from 2016 makes it so you only have 5 days to report a firearm as stolen. Waiting longer is a crime (an infraction punishable by a monetary fine). As a practical matter, storing a firearm in a storage unit makes it difficult to comply with this law.

An on-site lockbox or small safe is a better option.

They make a number of safes that go under the bed. You would use a cable lock to attach it to the bed so that nobody steals the safe with the guns inside.

Reeds has some sort of storage arrangement possibly available for handguns, not aware of any for long guns. There are some safe options that are very small footprint, but since you don't want to store it in your apartment that's not much help.

You have five days from when you knew it was stolen, not five days from when it was stolen.

There are any number of reasons to not store your guns at a self-storage place, supposed difficulty in complying with a law regarding reporting them stolen isn't one of them.

Put a "Fur is Murder" (would that be "furder"?) sign on your door, and a "COEXIST" bumper sticker on your car. That way everyone will know you're a coffee server, broke, and there's no reason to break into your apartment and rob you.

I bought one. They ship it disassembled in a large box without any labeling. The trucker who delivered it was clueless as to what was in it and he used his pallet jack to take it down the driveway, behind my gate.

Perhaps it will work for you. Or perhaps not. Just another option.

Security should be done in layers... So don't just rely a lock cabinet and think is it ok. Since you like in an apartment, make sure yout door lock is secure and keep the rifle cabinet behind another set of locked doors.

exactly this. I had my gibson guitar case for my method of transporting. One of my neighbors came up to me and asked me if they could try it out. I luckily had 2 cases on hand 1 with the guns the other with the guitar. Just handed him the guitar to play while I loaded my other in the car lol.

If you live alone, why do you need a safe to begin with? The kind of safe you can get in an apartment won't really protect you from theft beyond a few minutes.
