    Deserts in norcal

I live in Sonoma county and I want to know of any place where I could do a desert shoot within say 150 miles, if that's even possible. I'm not that familiar with the terrain.

BTW I don't have a truck so goat trails are a no no.

    Looks like
within Ca, you need to get to SoCal.
    outside Ca, mebbe Nevada?

Nor-Cal isn't really known for it's deserts, lol. There are plenty of open areas across this part of the state, but none of them would be classified as deserts. The only way you could get to a desert by driving 150 miles would be if you lived that distance from the California-Nevada border.

Does it have to be desert? Or are you just looking for a place "out in the wilderness" that you can go shoot unhassled? I too am looking for a place around sonoma/napa counties, but I've been putting off contacting our "local" BLM office, which is way up in Ukiah.

Knoxville Rd outside of Lake Berryessa. It's BLM, and actually quite desert like lol.

Yeah, they closed part of it, but there are other area's there to shoot if you know where to go. There is even an organized range back in there somewhere if I remember correctly.

Northeast of Mt. Shasta (Beyond Weed and near the Pluto Caves (Volcanic) is a High Desert area that is strangely located !

BLM has closed down all of Knoxville for shooting. You can hunt and take game. No plinking or sighting in at all. The range you talk about has been bulldozed up. I been shooting up there for 20+ years and not to happy about it.

Check out the Lake Pillsbury area (Mendocino National Forest). Northeast of Ukiah and within your mileage range. I could be mistaken, but I believe there are areas up there to shoot.

ok, thanks guys. I don't actually need a desert I just thought it would be fun. Pretty much any open space where I wouldn't be hassled would be good.

I have my own small indoor target range on my property in Sonoma County but I have heard of some people going to Middletown and shooting. This is just east of Sonoma County, I have never been there but have heard this form several friends who also use my range, they have invited me to go with them but never have!

Lake Pillsbury can be hard on cars...but I have seen tons of people do it. I used to live there and shoot almost every day. Cow Mountain is open to shoot. You most likely will not make it to the range there without 4wheel drive but there are plenty of places a car can make it to shoot.
