Long gun shipping has gotten expensive!!

I actually sold a rifle recently...

Haven't shipped a long gun in about 6 years. I was shocked at what the shipping companies as well as the USPS are charging.

This was a longer than normal rifle box (55"x 11"x5") that weighed 16 pounds.

I couldn't ship, it through "Ship my gun.com" because it exceeded their size and weight limits.

It was a pretty valuable rifle, so insurance was $25.65 Priority mail ended up the cheapest at $64.50

    Total $ 90.15

I was stunned. But it was over size...

If I happen to need to ship a long gun in the future I'll be sure to check the costs before I quote a shipping price to a buyer.

I thought it would cost around $50

Oh, it was a Canadian Ross M10 rifle in .303

AZ to VA. Packages over 51" long also have a surcharge.

Distance makes a big difference. I shipped an AR 308 to Texas, and it cost somewhere around 40 bucks including insurance. Then a month later I shipped another one, same exact size box to PA, and it was 65 bucks.

The rifle was insured for $1,700.00 that was $25 alone.

ShipMyGun has gotten very expensive even for small packages.

If you have an account with fedex/ ups the rate can be cheaper.

If you have a relationship with a business some will let you use their account # and you pay with your credit card.

Insurance is tricky as some carriers require really specific packaging or they won’t honor a damage claim.

I ran the FedEx rate for the package is was basically the same price...

If you have a regular sized rifle, and it's not over 15 pounds shipmygun.com would have been probably half the cost.

But the length and weight of this package prevented using them.

my rates for UPS with those dims would have been $70 total. Since my business insurance covers guns my cost would have been only $50. Go over 48" and the cost is crazy. I usually take down guns longer than 48" when possible. Saves about $20-30.

Fwiw I use shipmygun.com, my packages have weighed and been larger than their allotment, I put it at the maximum and went along with it.

                        No issues so far.

It's better to remove the barreled action from the stock and wrap each one up really well before bundling them together and wrapping them some more.
By separating the parts, the package gets shorter AND the likelihood of damage in transit goes down.
It also gets you away from "oversized" package rates.

If it would have been possible I would have. But with this one it wasn't. Buyers often don't want their 100+ year old rifle taken apart.
