I am leaving CA to a more open free state that doesn't require to register etc.
its a handgun he purchase long before FFL was required in CA. If he give it to me do I need to do an intra-family transfer or can I just take it with me and transport it according by the law?

Dates to keep in mind...

01-01-1991 = Firearm transfers must be done through a CA FFL dealer.

01-01-1993 = Intra-familial firearm transfers are exempt from the CA FFL dealer requirement, but must be reported to CA DOJ within 30 days of the transfer.
