Only go 29 in a 30 round mag?

A guy on YouTube does daily videos and says he only loads a 30 round mag with 29. Is that to save the mag spring or ?

It's either to save the spring (a myth) or some rifles can get jammed up with that last round (internet rumors). So why does DD make 32 rounders?

We only loaded 18 rounds in our 20 round M14 and M16 magazines. Why? Because that's what the senior NCOs said should be done and they had been there and done it.

A magazine loaded to full capacity may cause some drag on the bolt for the first couple of rounds, especially if the weapon is dirty from extended firing. That drag might be enough to hamper proper cycling.

Does our yearly cause drag on the bolt or failure to feed. It would be interesting to see if the added friction of more rounds in addition to the spring and follower being bottomed out cause failures to feed or pressure on the bolt.

No matter how you look at it we are talking about working around crappy magazines.

I saw load yours to capacity. Use a loader if needed. Do some mag dumps and see if you can get a failure. If you can take a look at the springs and follower.

In a free state I would day chuck the magazines and replace them with good ones but that isn't always an option. You might need to smooth out the bodies or follower. Or replace a spring.

You do you. Personal preference.

De-loading a mag can make it easier to load on a closed bolt, get used to smacking the bottom of mags to make sure it is seated versus de-load them IMO. It can also prevent drag on the bolt which can cause jams, IMO a clean properly lubed rifle should not have this problem. If you are in a climate where you need to depend on a rifle that is dirty, then de-loading is an option, for most of us proper rifle care and function is better option.

this the reason i do it with my metal mags. i usually download to 28 easier for me to count my rounds when firing.

Counting wouldn't really matter if you do your admin reloads routinely. I tend to forget either one lol

Doing mag dumps lately is like burning 20.00 bills in the fireplace.

If you load 30 in the aluminum usgi ar mags, its difficult to seat a mag with the bolt forward.

Thats pretty much the only reason, and Larry Vickers confirmed this in a class.

All of my usgi mags get downloaded 1 round. Those can be a real ***** to seat in the rifle. Pmags and other mags are easy though.

I have experienced drag issues with fully loaded mags. I typically keep a few 40 round mags on hand with 35 in each. All my other mags are in a safe empty.

That's why i only load 8 in my 10 round mags. Plus if you load them to 10 you're getting really close to 11.
