I know the S&W Shield 2.0 isn't on the roster (even though the original is), but can we dare hope that the Shield Plus gets on the roster...?

Do they have a non-single stack magazine? That’d be the M&P Compact?

I'm not sure, but if I had to guess, I would imagine that the S&W Shield Plus' magazine is similar to the magazine used in the Sig P365, Springfield Hellcat, etc.

Essentially gives S&W a "middleweight" option:

M&P Shield 1.0/2.0: single stack (7+1)
M&P Shield Plus: in between (10+1)
M&P Compact: double stack (12+1)

Not unlike the Glock:

Glock 43: single stack (6+1)
Glock 43x: in between (10+1) (slimmer but taller)
Glock 26: double stack (10+1) (chunkier but shorter)

Smith & Wesson is one of the few companies willing to "play ball" with unfriendly states (e.g. they make California and Massachusetts-compliant versions of their firearms), and yes, the 1.0 is one of the few "new" firearms from the past decade to make the roster.



But I know that Gov Newsom is more anti-2A than Gov Brown, that the State Assembly/Senate is virtually a single party legislature, and that the changes in the federal government make increased restrictions more likely.

Id rather buy one after someone has fired 1,000 rounds so the springs and buttons and mags would be worn in lol.

I like to think this isn't another one of those "look at all the cool things we can't have in California" posts (yes, those can be annoying).

For better or for worse, the M&P Shield is very popular here in California, precisely because it's one of the few CCW-appropriate pistols released in the past 10 years that's on the state roster. Sample size of one, but in both my initial and renewal CCW classes, those who carried on-roster pistols (about half the class) invariably chose the Shield (with the rest carrying some off-roster Glock, Ruger, or Sig).

Because it's so popular and because the competitors (e.g. Glock 43/43X, Ruger EC9/LC9/LC9s, Sig P365, Springfield Hellcat, etc) are off-roster, I know that many of us California Shield owners have been looking into upgrades. Just the other week, I started doing some serious comparison shopping between the MagGuts +1/+2 magazine springs and Hyve/Strike Industries/Xtech's +2 magazine extensions. Almost pulled the trigger, but then decided to hold off for Memorial Day sales.

But then this comes along, and it gets me thinking. The Shield Plus is compatible with my existing holsters, weaponlight, and sights (i.e. I've already invested in the Shield line) -- but it comes standard with 10+1 magazines. So doing the math, is it really worth the ~$25/magazine to upgrade my current Shield 1.0 magazines, or should I start researching the various ways CalGunners get their hands on off-roster pistols?

In other words, the release of the Shield Plus is sort of a paradigm shift for me, and I figured it might be of interest to others in a similar boat (i.e. a Shield owner living in California who wants to upgrade magazine capacity). This is why I posted about the M&P Shield Plus, but not the Ruger Max 9 (another slim-line 10+1 pistol that was unveiled yesterday).

From what I've researched, you have four options that will turn your 7-round Shield 1.0/2.0 magazine into a 9-round magazine, and your 8-round magazine into a 10-round magazine:

- MagGuts +2 magazine spring
- Hyve +2 magazine extension
- Strike Industries +2 magazine extension
- Xtech +2 magazine extension

If there are more, I'm happy to be corrected.

OK I looked up the specs to try to see reason why the fuss,

shield plus width = 1.1"
shield width = 0.95"
G26 width = 1.0"
CW9 width = 0.91"
