Ammo Question

Nobody is addressing op's question. I must have 20 online ammo accounts that I check all the time. Nobody ever has anything. Who's buying it? Is it a secret society? The last .17hmr I got was directly from CCI in early January. Nothing available since anywhere.

Nobody is buying it because it's not even getting manufactured. You can't work from home if you manufacture ammo.

Coming from a production background I can tell you that the country went through a LEAN manufacturing change in the early 2000s. This means there are no giant warehouses full of inventory. Inventory takes space and space is money. We all hated the Just In Time method as any increase in demand equaled overtime and any delay in shipments meant late orders. Everything runs on a prediction of demand.

So again, the increase in number of new gun owners, new enthusiasts and reloaders and fearful preppers have made a spike in demand. Companies will look at how long this demand sustains as it takes millions to build a new factory.

If a toilet paper company built a new factory based on the sudden increase in March/April of 2020, they'd be left with an empty factory now. Now the ammo companies are making record profit. And the perception of low ammo may even feed back into the demand. You can't get it so get it if you see it even at double the price. Money trickles from the LGS back up to the corps that own the ammo makers and stockholders. They have no incentive to spend money, increasing inventory actually lowers their profit...

Let's say there are 150 Million Gun owners in America...

1/3 realize that ANTIFA and President Harris will do things like Ammo Registration, Ammo Fees etc. If they can't register guns, they can register Ammo buyers....


So 50,000,000 people are buying 3-10 Cases of ammo (3,000 - 10,000) rounds

500,000,000,000 are needed for this demand- and thats on top of normal demand

I keep hearing the ammo manufacturers are cranking out product, but something just doesn't make sense. My LGS has been basically out of everything for 8 months or so, but it's a small place and probably doesn't have much pull. But, when I look at any of the big guys (Midway, lucky gunner, ammo supply warehouse, bud's gun shop) they are all completely out of stock as well. So, if the big retailers don't have anything, and the small shops don't have anything, then where is all this ammo getting sold? I understand the popular calibers (9mm, 38, 556/223, and even the rimfires), but, stuff like 243 and 270 win are out everywhere as well. Any ideas on where all this alleged stock is going?

As a “hoarder”, I’m waiting a bit longer before selling. Saw this coming after 2012, and started buying up cases of 9mm, .38, .45, .223, etc. Ditto for primers of all sizes. Primers were being offered for $30/K at one point, and if you bought enough, they included shipping.
Others have mentioned all the new gun owners. Methinks there will be a whole bunch of entry level cheaper guns for sale in a few years. Wait for that, then swoop in for deals; store away, and make a killing at the next cycle.

Funny my local Big 5 has too many "odd-ball" calibers in stock, every week they keep getting them and having to stockpile in the back, stuff like 25-06, 225-Winchester, "too much power" calibers like .338 Lapua, 300 win-mag, etc. the popular ones are cleaned out 2 hours after opening on delivery days.

I understand supply and demand. That's not what I'm getting at. If the large retailers aren't getting anything in to sell, where is it going? I'm stocked pretty deep, and haven't bought anything in about a year, no way I'm paying these absurd prices, I've been through this before, but I don't ever remember it being this bad. The point made above about raw materials and shipping seems to make the most sense.

I hear you brother, I felt something was coming before all "this stuff" broke and told my wife I felt "some bad things were about to break upon the world." I started buying ammo a box or two at a time as I could afford them several years back. Boy am I glad I did now. I still think there is more "bad" and even "worse evil" to come before things are going to get better. Be prepared is more than a "Boy Scout Moto."

it gets to the distributors, because somebody on another forum that can buy wholesale gets a list of what they have.

My FFL are getting ammo in. But it’s the Distributors making it hard for shops to get stuff in. Many are on auction sites selling ammo there instead to the dealers direct. Look at 2A Zone. To get 9mm Ammo in they had to buy a package deal of 9mm with 50CAL Ammo. Ammo they can’t sale in CA. Another Had to buy a 5000rd mystery pallet of ammo that had 9/40/45/38. First pallet had 1500rds of 9mm. They were happy. So they ordered a second pallet n it only had 200rds of 9mm. I have a family member that works in the gun industry. His boss told him. Not to sale any ammo to shops that haven’t done over 75k in business with them. They have plenty of ammo. The owners are only letting it go for almost 3x the price. I watched a guy pay $475.99 for 500rds Tula 9mm. Another guy picked up 50rds of 9mm wwb for $47.99. 500rds of ZQ was $1000.00. Perfecta 1000rds sold for $2500.00.
