    Smith Dash Numbers

I would like to find a link to description of the various dash numbers for the 686 and 29 models.

I can't find anything on the 29 models past -3...

    Thanks

I'm trying to decide between purchasing a 686-3 or a 686-4. From what I've been able to find, here is the history: 686 History 686 ''dash nothing'' - 1980 686-1, 1986 - radius stud package and floating hand 686-M - 1987 recall stamping on earlier versions 686-2, 1987, hammer nose change...

I am looking to get a model 29 with a 6" or 8" barrel for target, fun, maybe even a open sight PA black bear gun. I already have a 329NG so I am familiar with 44s, but I am not totaly familiar with the dash numbers, are they simply years of manufacture? were there big design changes? I have 3...

the S&W forum is your best bet.

Also: from the SWSC, 4th edition:

29-4 1988 new yoke retention system/radius stud package, floating hand (early models marked 3E for endurance package)
    29-5 -
29-6: 1993 hogue grips, d&t frame top strap, change read sight leaf, change extractor -
1995-96: delete Sq butt, change to MIM thumbpiece
    1997: MIM triggers
29-7:1998 - change to MIM hammer and move firing pin from hammer to frame mounted, change in frame design, eliminated pressed in cylinder stop stud, eliminate serrated tangs, change in lockwork - 1999 M29 officially discontinued with a small run in 2000.
29-8: 2001 -new frame design with internal lock, 4 screw sideplate
29-9 and 29-10: cosmetic changes (PC variations, blue, nickel, heritage, etc)

I'm no S&W expert, but AFAIK...

Each dash number reflects a change with the handgun.
Could be a product improvement or a change in the manufacturing process.

      MIM parts introduced with the ~ 29-7, 629-5, 586-5, 686-5
      Internal lock introduced with the ~ 29-8, 629-6, 586-6, 686-6

        you're back!

I highly recommend your own copy of the SCSW.. much easier to read and understand than gathering bits n pieces from various web pages.. very informative and valuable resource for any s&w collector..

I'm sure cheaper from other outlets but this is it https://www.gundigeststore.com/produ...n-4th-edition/

        good luck!
I started out with nothing - and I still have most of it

Engineering changes, some rated a dash number, some not. Example: M60 no dash can have a pinned barrel or not. M66 no dash can have stainless rear sight (early) or black.

Yeah, if your wondering about the different S&W dash numbers and such, just buy a copy of SCSW because it will save you a bunch of time. Most of the time, if you see something posted on a forum it's a direct quote from this book anyway.
