Is it a really bad idea to...

...listen to music at the range under your ear protection?

I only ask because I've used homebrew Noise blocking headphones for years. I take a pair of cheapo headphones, break 'em and jam the ear pieces into the ears of ear protection, sound WAY better than noise canceling 'phones.

I suppose it depends on the type of range. Outdoor ranges with line breaks are definitely a bad idea, you can't hear range commands.

Indoor ranges, while it doesn't have line breaks have PA systems.

I'd be inclined to say that it is a bad idea to listen to music while shooting. Shooting requires your full attention.

Then again, I'd probably be bobbin' my head to the music if I listened to anything while shooting. It would ruin my groups.

I agree with Majik. You need to be able to hear the range command and emergency cease fire.

        That was my basic thinking...

I just get sick of hearing my own breathing while shooting. The indoor range I go to doesn't have a PA. I think...

Safety First. And shooting to your own personal soundtrack under your headphones isn't safe. And is hell on your situational awareness.

Very Bad Idea, safety first. ipods are for when youre riding a bike or at the gym not handling weapons even under controlled environments.

For safety reasons, I'd forego the music. Besides, when the bad guys attack from the shadows there won't be a sound track playing in the background.

I tried this while on my property. It lead to sloppiness and a feeling of disconnect. IMHO music, especially good music, fills you with an emotional state that is better left for instances where you needn't be in complete control.

I usually blast the music in my truck while I shoot out of the bed.

You can always sing to yourself. Watch out for the other people on the range if you are out of key.
