Why not buy a used one anyway? Even if the quality is going to be good for the new ones, it won't be as nice as the ones from decades ago.

Personally, I'm more curious about who is going to produce Remington 700's and in what form. Insofar as shotguns, the 870 was unlikely to disappear for very long. It may not be Remington's "most iconic" gun, but it is one of the most popular, pump action shotguns of all time. That makes it a 'safe' bet to get back on the market and, I suspect, in it's 'basic' form (well... maybe with synthetic stock/forend); not only for the new owners to 'learn' on, but it'd likely have an almost assured market if the quality is there.

Imo, the "quality" was due directly to Remington hand fitting the gun.

I'd still be looking for a used gun...no plastic furniture.

With Ruger's focusing on cost cutting, I think their introduction of Marlins will be a train wreck...no hand fitting. Remington produced piles of crap Marlin guns. Consequently the price difference of hand fitted v. not.

This is what I want to know. The 700 action is an industry standard with such a huge market following. It's too popular a platform to disappear.

I have a Remington 700P 308 police model, fantastic rifle. Would love to pick up some more 700s in other calibers.
