    Modding my Registered AW's

Hey everyone - I have a few registered bullet button rifles. Did the assault weapon registration create any kind of flexibility for modifications? I know we aren't allowed to change the magazine release mechanism. They have been sitting in the safe for awhile and they need some love

Change everything except the bb maglock. Keep OAL > 26"

From the DOJ FAQ about Bullet Button Assault Weapons at https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/regagunfaqs#33b

      33. What changes can I make to my assault weapon after I register it?

          Hello,

Late to the party, but if you guys could help me understand this clearly:

If an owner registered his ARs as AWs before the deadline, is he ok to bring to the range as long as his ARs have a bullet button and are under 26” OAL?

          Thanks.

^ Yes that is why you registered them so you could shoot them..

By an AR under 26-inches in overall length, I assume we're talking "pistols" and not "rifles"? A "rifle" under 26-inches in overall length is a short-barreled rifle and illegal under Penal Code section 33210, for most people. There is also that discussion on the federal level about whether braced pistols are short-barreled rifles.

If we're talking about a registered assault weapon, then under Penal Code section 30945, a range is one of the few places to legally possess and use it.

Sorry, meant “over” 26” (not under)

I answered that in this thread already, two posts previous.
