Buddy upset with counter to his trade request

So a buddy of mine called up and wants to trade rifles.

My LNIB Rem 700 SPS Varmint in .223 with Leupold rings, bases, Nikon Pro Staff scope and 1 box of ammo through it
    for
His Savage 110 in .270, pre-Accutrigger with cheap no name Chinese scope and rings, blemishes on barrel and receiver, blond wood stock, unknown round count.

He seemed pissed when I said sure, just add $300 to your offer and we are good. Thinks I am trying to rip him off. I told him you came to me with a trade, I countered with what I am willing to accept in trade and you get mad? You want to trade straight across your $350 rifle for my $700 rifle.

Told him to put down the crack pipe and see me when he is serious.

I just don't understand some peoples thinking.

ETA: Also wanted me to throw in 100 rounds of ammo to his 40 rounds.

Guy needs to do a bit of research, and down a couple pieces of humble pie.

Reminds me of when an old buddy of mine borrowed my freezer temporarily and when I went to get it back after a 2 weeks heads up, he told me he was going to give me $50.00 for it. When I told him $150.00 would work for me he got pissed and said that he was going to give me $50.00. Needless to say his meats was sitting in the Snow in his back yard and I got my freezer back.

Nice, i cant stand it when people just lay claim to other peoples stuff just because they have used it for a while.

The simple solution is to let him know that you are more interested in keeping your friendship with him than doing a trade where one of you will feel victimized.

              I already told him no.

Just can't believe what some people think is fair when it comes to a trade.

LOL. I would think people do some research on the items they want to trade, it would be logical to trade for items of equal value.

Yes. He is the kind of guy that will do anything for you and ask for little to nothing in return.

He is just clueless when it comes to guns. Thinks any bolt rifle is the equal to any other, caliber aside. Hell, he thinks that old savage is worth more because it is 'vintage'.

Introduce him to the concept of dollars. They work much better as equal value objects.

I've seen bolt rifles that cost over $5000. How on this green earth does he think that "some other bolt gun" is going to be the equal of that?

Because he is a grumpy, cantankerous old bastard. And that is one of the things that I like about him.
And to him, it is just a tool. Nothing more. It has no more value than what he is willing to pay for it.

Grumpy old bastards like him make me smile.
