Best way to liquidate deceased Father's gun collection?

Few more quick questions about selling on Gunbroker.
How much should I charge for shipping? Any particular shipping speed that is needed?
Do I charge them sales tax? When I bought on Gunbroker my FFL charged me sales tax, I assume that will be the case when I sell also?Comment

Sorry for your loss.
As mentioned your father had a good eye for his collection.
I see half a dozen on that list I dont have and wouldn't be against adding.
Not to see anymore tools leave ca, but with as picky as ca is on the subject....
Would it be worth looking into a dealer outside of ca to sell those on?
Was kind of thinking out loud about
audiophil2 in Arizona.
Don't know if that's something he does (tools headed out of ca instead of toward ca)Last edited by RTE; 01-19-2021, 7:47 PM.Comment

If you sell pistols, FedEx and UPS charge a LOT, like 70 bucks or more because of their Next Day Air ripoff rule. You might be able to find an FFL to ship it for you - they can use cheaper form of shipping. There's a website that finds FFL's that do that, I can't remember the name. Long guns can be mailed or sent via UPS/FedEx.
Sales tax is a tricky question. I never collected sales tax before but GB has said recently it must collect for certain states. They will calc it and put it in the invoice that you can look at when your items sell. I just mark that I do not collect on the site and GB fixes it up for you.Comment

You can ship long guns by USPS, UPS or Fedex.
Each have different regulations on where you can drop off a shipment containing a firearm.
UPS and Fedex may require overnight shipping of handguns but they will let you ship long guns by ground.
Figure out what each package will cost to say New York City and then use that as your shipping cost for the whole country.
You are not responsible for (or even allowed to be) collecting sales tax unless you have a business and sales tax ID for your business in the state you are shipping to.
In states that require sales tax, the FFL's usually collect the sales tax from the buyer.Randall Rausch

You can only ship but only to an FFL.
Long guns shipped UPS ground, approximately $35.
Handguns shipped UPS next day air, approximately $85.
Handguns must ship “next day air” and long guns doesn’t matter.
ALWAYS buy insurance, delivery confirmation, and adult signature.
However, my recommendation is to put them in consignment at local FFL. You will spend a lot of time answering pm’s and buyers will use up a lot of your time! Expect it!
If you only get 25% of the sale due to 3 other beneficiaries then your time will be for free. The others won’t recognize the effort so no point in arguing it. For this reason I think your best option is consignment at a local FFL!
Gun selling is tricky. I had two shotguns posted here for at least 3 months and very little interest, then I put them on consignment and they both sold immediately for more than I was asking here. I got the amounts I wanted but the the buyers paid the FFL’s markup and sales tax. Funny market!Comment

PPT thru CalGuns - Where are you located? You've got some nice firearms there!
Hey guys,
Father passed away a few months ago, leaving behind his gun collection. I already have too many guns myself, and don't really want 13 more guns. I have bought many guns in the past, from both Turners and Gunbroker, but never sold one. What would be the best way to sell these guns off and get the best price? I was thinking of taking them to Turners for consignment, but I know they are going to take at least 20%.
I'm looking at Gunbroker now, but unsure if a private party is allowed to sell there, or if you must hold an FFL.
Located in San Diego if that changes anything.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Below is a list of what I will be selling:
Ruger Mini 30
Ruger Single Six
Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Mag
Ruger SR9c
Ruger Red Label Over/Under 12ga
Colt Python (New Model)
ATI GSG M1911 22lr
Kimber Pro CDP II
Marlin 1894 .44 Mag
Browning Buckmark
S&W Model 60 Pro .357 Mag
Henry Big Boy .357 Mag
Henry Golden Boy 22lr
Thanks guys!

Unless you NEED the money DON'T SELL ANY. Today's price ceiling could easily become tomorrow's baseline. Been there, done that since 1993, there has been 'maybe' 2-3 guns that I didn't regret selling but everything else I regretted at one point. Keep them.

Finally getting around to listing them on Gunbroker. Couple things I'm still unsure about.
5 DROS per year limit, but possibly waived if it is for an estate? How do I know for sure if I qualify for the limit being waived? I plan on listing 12 guns on Gunbroker.
Also, if someone in California purchases my gun from Gunbroker, are there any extra steps I have to take? What about NY and other commie states?Comment

I am in San Diego and might be interested in the lever gun so I can become a genuine member of the Mojave Lever Crew instead of a prospective member. Prices are high now, I would not want it below market price, I want you to get the most you can for it. Have you looked up pricing on the lever gun? Is it an old one?
Edit: Sorry I am not sure about your question of the transfer limit if you are selling guns from an estate. Have you called a local FFL to see their consignment fees? They might also be able to answer your question about selling more than 5.Last edited by SanDiego619; 02-03-2021, 2:04 PM.Where the people fear the government you have tyranny. I hadn’t seen this mentioned but I’ll throw it out there- New or UR users on Gunbroker will not get top dollar. Non FFL and new sellers will get less. You’d be best off selling all to one guy yourself at some sort of bulk discount or going with one of the aforementioned auction houses.Comment

If you ship guns out of state, they are NOT going to be PPT'd.
They are going to an FFL who is going to NICS them to the buyer.
You only need to worry about local California PPT transfers where you are going to meet the buyer at an FFL and do the transfer as a PPT.
If you are shipping a gun within CA, the receiving dealer will do the transfer to the buyer as if the gun was in the dealer's inventory so again, YOU are not part of the transaction.
Different states have different rules so you need to be sure you don't ship anything to them that would not be legal.
If you read through some gunbroker listings, you will eventually find some of them that list the specific state restrictions.Randall Rausch
