NSSF Estimates 434 Million Firearms in Civilian Possession

Recent report by the NSSF (National Shooting Sports Foundation) estimates there are 434 million firearms in civilian possession as of 2019. This includes approx. 20 million "modern sporting rifles". Perhaps there is hope for our Republic afterall.

    I helped with that!

Looks like we can hit 450 M in under two years if we keep it up.

Also, more imported shotguns than domestic...I was surprised.

Yeah, don't get too excited, those 450+ million guns are owned by the same 32% of the population. 450 million guns is NOT the same as 450 million PEOPLE owning guns.

"We" are still a MINORITY of the population.

Read Gallup's short answer to this common question about gun ownership, including what percentages of major demographic subgroups own guns.

I think 2020 changed that by millions.

Obviously. The US population is 328 million. We have more guns than people. Haha, mureca!

Strange, as the estimate was around 400M back in 2009 or 2010 (that's accounting for estimated attrition and not counting some categories, such as home-made guns), and since then at least 100M new firearms were added:

This isn't correct. Not considering the outliers (which can be as low as 25% and as high as 50%), the surveys generally report 32% to 42%:

One report says the U.S. has just 4% of the world’s population but owns about 40% of civilian-owned firearms globally.

Read Gallup's short answer to this common question about gun ownership, including what percentages of major demographic subgroups own guns.

Gun ownership in the United States has remained relatively stable over the past few decades, with ** percent of U.S.

Such high spread results from using different methods and the fact that due to various factors (including their vilifying and persecution) gun owners are often not open about their gun ownership. The second factor also hints at the possibility that the actual numbers are higher.

Also keep in mind that this is the percentage of households with guns in them, not the percentage of gun owners.

Or is that "just the ones we know about", i.e. registered firearms?
Think of all the firearms produced before there was registration. How many millions of Model 94 were produced before 1963 and are still there out there?

Wild guess the wife doesn't even know how many I own some my dad bought 70 or 80 years ago.

Fewer people are killed with all rifles each year (323 in 2011) than with shotguns (356), hammers and clubs (496), and hands and feet (728).

Add at least 40 million to that number, based on 2020 NICS inquiries.
