"REAL ID" Needed to purchase ammo?

My son tried today to buy a box of ammo at a local sporting goods chain store. The counter clerk told him he couldn't purchase it with a CDL that has "REAL ID" on it, plus a birth certificate, and proof of state residency. He said the CDL has his home address on it, but the clerk denied it on the grounds his CDL said "Federal Limits Apply". I told him that meant he cannot fly with that on his CDL, but I have never heard it meant you cannot buy ammo.

I have several thousand rounds of ammo on hand, so I have not had to buy any since this hare-brained law went into effect. What's the truth?

If you have a CDL with "Federal Limits Apply", you will need to bring a second document for verification. I always bring my current and valid Passport and it works for ammo or purchasing a firearm.

Yes, RealID or the supporting docs is required.

Federal Limits Apply means your ID does not establish US Citizenship or your legal presence in the US. You need to be a citizen or here legally to buy guns and ammo. Unfortunately CA gives out DL to illegals, and they are proud to do it.

Recent changes to California driver licenses and identification cards may result in firearms dealers requiring that holders of a driver license or identification card with the words “Federal Limits Apply” on it provide documentary proof that they are lawfully present in the United States in order to purchase a firearm. This is because federal law prohibits anyone who is not lawfully present in the United States from receiving or possessing a firearm or ammunition.
Why would anyone want to have an ID that essentially says, "I might be an illegal alien". That's what 'Federal Limits Apply' means.

Would a passport card be adequate?

Yes it should, it is only issued to US Nationals and meets the requirements of the REAL ID act to prove US citizenship. Whether a given FFL knows that and will accept it, is another story.

Real ID with physical address, If it has PO box will need something with physical address on it along with the ID. I use car registration that DMV let me put both on, they wouldn't on the real ID.

If you don't yet have a Real ID you will need to bring either a passport or birth certificate along with your CA ID. If your son is going to be purchasing ammo regularly her should just do the real ID process. It's pretty painless and you can do most of it on the DMV website.

Ignorance of the law doesn't make you exempt from it. I think the law passed middle of 2019.

When I renewed my passports a year or two ago, I paid extra for the little passport card. I felt like a duped *******. I felt like I got juked into buying a little useless gimmick card.

Low and behold, its has been the greatest thing since sliced bread. I use it for buying ammo (when it was available lol). Its handy and I don't take the risk of carrying around the regular passport and possibly losing it.

I'm pretty satisfied with the passport card as ID for buying ammo/guns.

Not yet in the REST of the country. I won't "NEED" a new D-L for a few years yet. In no hurry to get & run my "new &... improved ..." D-L through the 7-11 microwave, to kill the chip in it, yet.

This took effect in Sept if I'm not mistaken. I went to do a DROS and it had just started. I was concerned I wouldn't be able to pick up my firearm at the end of the 10 days, but I went online and ordered a copy of my birth certificate and it was here in 2 days.

More and more things will be requiring this I'm afraid.

So far no gun store has cared about my illegal alien ID here. Maybe I shop the right places?
