    Hand me down?

Today I was passed down three of my grandfathers handguns. My grandfather and I used to shoot them together, but when he passed away they went to my mother until she felt like giving them to me. So tonight she passed along a Colt 32 Pocket Positive Police chrome with pearl handles, Colt 38 Police Positive Special. The most important gun to me is the 45 Colt Peacemaker that John Wayne had given to my grandfather as a gift. My grandfather and Mr. Wayne were in the cattle business together for many years and often stayed at each others houses. I have tons of pictures of them together and even one of John Wayne holding me as an infant.

My question is (and please excuse me because I am sure this has been answered before but I can't find it), what should be the legit method of transfer? I do not believe my mom had ever signed anything when she received the guns. It was in Kentucky and they don't really follow the laws back there. How should I go about transferring these guns? Any help or advise will be greatly appreciated.

I beleive you just have to submit a form to the CA DOJ saying the guns are being transferred to you, and you should be good to go. Also, if you don't have one already, you should also get a HSC (Handgun Safety Certificate), you can probably take the test to get one at your local gun shop.

There might be something about them being on the approved handgun list or not, but I'm not really clear on that part. Hope I helped.

Tundraman- the form can be had at this link http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/...98450ec03ac9bc. you fill out one form for all the guns and pay the DOJ a $19 fee. you will also need a HSC as FatKatMatt noted(although I know you are already going to do this if you are buying another this weekend)

Thanks 762cavalier! I was just trying to figure out which form I needed to fill out. And yes you are correct, I will most likely be taking the HSC test tomorrow morning. I can't wait

Also keep in mind it's $19 per gun, so $57 for all three and they are yours. I believe you can take ownership of them immediately, even as you place the registration form in the mail. I've heard of people getting confirmations and others saying they never got them. If you don't get one after several weeks you might want to request a print out of all firearms registered to you to make sure they are in fact registered to you.

Nice sounding pistols by the way. And KEEP ANYTHING connecting John Wayne to that pistol. The story alone will help it's value, but having something to back up what you are saying, including those pictures, business papers connecting your family to Mr. Wayne, etc will GREATLY increase the value of that gun. While it may not matter to you now, it will matter to someone one day, even if it is your grandkids who only have the paper records to go off of when your memory gets too fuzzy to remember.

Sorry Neo but it is only 19 dollars for 1 or more guns as stated at the top of the form that I linked. it is $19 for 1 gun or $19 for 3 guns not $57 as you stated.

But, you are correct that ANY provenence that attaches that firearm and T-mans family to John Wayne will significantly increase the guns value

Wow! If they were mine I would never give them up in a million years. Hopefully your descendents wont either.

Is it the C&R handguns that you have to pay for each then?

Man, I am really falling off the ball this week. First the C&R receiver thing, then this. Maybe I should take a break and reread everything again before I start posting.
