CA SAFE HANDGUNS: Olympic Pistol List?

Trying to find the current (2020) Olympic Pistol List. A quick google search shows a list that was updated in 2013.

Is there a newer list?

If so can you guys post a link?

Also, PC 30515, after the list, has

(3) The Department of Justice shall create a program that is consistent with the purposes stated in subdivision (c) to exempt new models of competitive pistols that would otherwise fall within the definition of “assault weapon” pursuant to this section from being classified as an assault weapon. The exempt competitive pistols may be based on recommendations by USA Shooting consistent with the regulations contained in the USA Shooting Official Rules or may be based on the recommendation or rules of any other organization that the department deems relevant.

Does CA-DOJ actually have such a program? If so, has it done that job? I have no idea.

As a long time member, athlete, coach, and administrator with USA Shooting I am not surprised the list has not been updated in quite some time.

There has been a lot of turnover in management in recent years at USA Shooting. New CEO, new staff, new coaches, new everything. Updating that list probably has not been a priority. The pistol staff and coaches in 2013 are long since gone. I believe the current coach is Jason Brown, Bronze Medalist from Beijing 2008. I've only spoken to him once, but I know he is highly respected.

But I shoot Olympic Rifle, so I don't have a lot of first hand knowledge on the pistol side.

Could you do us Calgunners a favor and ask them what we need to do to update the list with more current guns?

Guns like the Volquartsen Scorpion, Black Mamba, Ruger Mark IV, newer Buckmarks, and S&W Victory's would be awesome.

If USPSA/Steel Challenge was made an Olympic sport the flood gates could be opened.

Take a look at the ATF C&R list. The Olympic pistols are listed there as curios.

Nothing modern would be on the ATF C&R list i.e. Walther GSP or SSP pistols aren't on there.

50 meter Free Pistol was dropped as an Olympic Event after Rio 2016 so I wonder if they will eventually be dropped from being exempt.

25 meter rapid fire for the men and 25 meter sport pistol for the women are still on the Olympic Program.

I'll see what I may be able to find out. I've not been active with USA Shooting at all this year.

There was some talk of adding IPSC to the Olympics in the early 1990s, but the movement got squashed by the ISSF (International Sport Shooting Federation) which governs all of the current Olympic Shooting disciplines.

OP Here. Thanks guys. That's what I thought. Did tons of searching and wanted to confirm that 2013 was most recent. It looks like it was updated in 2003, possibly 2010, and again in 2011. I wonder why they stopped in 2013? Very interesting.

Over the last 10 years, USA Shooting itself has been in a struggle for it's own survival.

Out of the 47 National Sports Governing Bodies under the umbrella of the U.S. Olympic Committee, USA Shooting by far has the lowest annual budget.

Allocation of funds also depends on results. After the last Olympics, where pistol won no medals, the pistol team received no funding from USOC the following year. In other countries, they throw money at a team to try to help them win medals.

Due to the lack of funding many athletes end up paying for their own travel to International Events to try to qualify for the Olympic Games.

Political pressure to drop shooting from the Olympics, internal dysfunction, lack of money......it's not surprising some things are not updated or put on the back burner.

A few years ago USA Shooting athletes had to sue their own organization due to the lack of support.

It's gotten better recently, but the Organization only exists because shooting is still in the Olympics. Our fear is California leadership will make a push to drop shooting from the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Summer Games.

If shooting is dropped from the Olympics, USA Shooting will be dissolved, and rifle will be dropped as a sport in the NCAA also.

And the exemption for Olympic Pistols by the DOJ will go also.

Any of these worth owning for us normal folk?
Nearly all are 0.22.
Anything costing less than four figures that is uber accurate/reliable?
Perhaps somebody having substantial experience with these could chime in ....

That depends. Do you want to actually compete? Or just collect? Both are valid reasons. And it is cool to have something that not a lot of other people have.

If you want to compete, you'll have to get a .22. All Olympic pistol and rifle events which use a cartridge firing gun are .22LR. All other calibers have long since been phased out and are no longer allowed in competition.

After the draconian and cynically named "safe handgun" law was passed in California, Sandy Santibanez (Black Mountain Shooting Club, San Diego, Ca) and others managed to get an exemption for Olympic handguns through a very hostile state legislature, while the NRA and CRPA dithered and expressed disapproval of the exemption, because they wanted the whole law repealed.

The only realistic approach for ISSF (International Shooting Sports Federation) shooters was to promote exemptions for international shooting gear, by trading on the Olympic name, and using personal contacts with sympathetic legislators (there are a few).

If you’re able to find copy of USA Shooting News January/February 2004, Sandy SantiBanez wrote an article about that there was an Olympic Exempt List in California for Match Pistols and what was involved in getting this legislation passed. Sandy died Jan. 20, 2007.
