    Gifting a handgun

What is the process of givng a new handgun to a girlfriend without her knowing it's coming?
    Is this possible?

Can I have it ready and tell her I have to pick up some ammo and surprise her at the FFL?

I'd like to give it to her in a box on Xmas day but can't think of a way to do this.

edit: she is legal to own one

    Gifting a handgun

Not an expert, I think you would have to buy it, then gift it, take it, back then go transfer at your FFL. FFL would then take it from both of you. Merry Christmas.

      In California, it's pretty hard.

You can buy one, but to give it to her you have to PPT it at an FFL - no surprise possible between friends, for modern handguns.

Now, if you wanted to give her a black powder gun, that could work.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

That's kind of what I thought.
Buy it, let her unwrap it, then take her to an FFL for transfer.
It might have to be a random date gift as I probably wouldn't get it by Xmas now even if I bought it tomorrow.
We could still go to the range prior to giving it back for transfer...

I bought a 10-22 and then later an AR-7 for my future son in law, but fortunately owned a couple of each that I was able to gift wrap and let him unwrap, but told him his actual gun was at the FFL and he had to go down and start the DROS and wait ten+ days to get it. I purchased a 10-22 at Big Five (due to a great sale price). I wanted to pay in full and told them it was a gift and the giftee would come in later to do the DROS. They gave me a run around and said they could not do it that way because it would be a straw purchase. On the AR7 we just went together (to a LGS) and I paid as he did the DROS. Problem with buying a gun that you want to give as a gift later in a PPT is you end up paying for two DROS fees.

When my Dad bought .22 rifles for me and my brother for Christmas, he had to order them. They didn't arrive until after Christmas so he wrapped up a box of .22 ammo for each of us and included a Christmas card explaining the situation.

It worked perfectly (this was back in 1962).

Those were the days when even California was a nice place to live.
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

It was glorious. We lived in a small town called Cupertino (actually west of Cupertino in unincorporated land). Mostly all fruit orchards with quiet two lane roads between small towns. Major economy was agricultural (apricots, prunes, cherries, peaches, etc.). Several moderate sized canneries were in operation, especially busy during the late spring, early summer harvest.

This before the need for FFL (which was established because of the 1968 gun control bill). One of my Dad's coworkers at Lockheed was a gunsmith as his second life. We always did our firearms business with him.

                    Those were the days.
