You mean steel cases or m855? Oaktree is OK with steel car just no m855.

I didn't know this either until recently but there's steel tipped and steel cased, or both. I guess for military stuff, it's all about cost sometimes and using steel decreases it or makes it penetrate more. On targets or backstops, steel tips could cause more damage like if they are green tips in 5.56 (m855) or cheap components that might have steel in them. I had some .308 147g tips that were ferrous and didn't even know it. This could damage backstops or catch fire if causing a spark.

Steel cased ammo is done just for cost as steel is cheaper than brass. It could also cause more jams and make an unsafe range with people trying to work their fired or unfired rounds out of their gun.

I guess clarify with the range and take a magnet to your rounds to know which is which.

^^^ Nowhere on BLM FUD Hodge road since it is not BLM land. Bring a shovel and water in case you start a fire with your cheap ammo. And pick up your steel trash.

This...but the problem is that the people who shoot cheap *** steel ammo are the very people who leave their steel casings and trash targets out there. How do we know? All the steel cases left behind almost EVERY TIME! No responsible person should be shooting steel ammo during high fire alerts...inless you are at a range/location with a dedicated dirt backstop with no risk of ricochet into brush.

Steel ammo is illegal on CA BLM land. You can shoot it at Pala in San Diego County at the dirt berms. No shooting at steel.

Steel trash, never thought about it.....
So now when someone goes prone without gloves and get a cut they'd better have their tetanus shots up to date? There must be someone with a magnet picker that can run it around the range a few times a year. The only steel cased stuff I shoot is for the AK and those fly a mile off to the right somewhere. Or maybe a big broken speaker magnet and a rag.

Ok here's my idea. Not buying a 50 dollar powergrip. Someone's got a blown out subwoofer with those giant magnets (or two sometimes). Wear gloves, put a old rag or t-shirt around it. Then run it over the ground, then over the trash, pull the rag down. Repeat.

Sounds like something all the steel cased ammo shooters' should buy with all the $$$ they save shooting crap ammo...but then again...are they that responsible as a group... I think not!

Went to FT3, with brass 762 and even had all my ammo inspected before shooting. Toward the end of day/closing/cease fire, i accidentally repeat fired like a round a second.
They called seize fire, tried looking for casings past fire line, took time to dig through to find maybe 1 or 2 steel cased ammo to try blame on me.

So even if you go indoor with non steel 762 but with an ak, expect to be profiled or accused of using steel even after inspection.
