I wouldn't be surprised if some of the micro tubes of reel grease I bought in the past wasn't the exact same stuff with a little bit of red or blue dye mixed in.

Makes sense regarding the Cal's. And yep, most of the "premium" stuff is just rebranded Yamaha marine grease or Lucas. I'm sure the same goes for firearm stuff, just slap a tactical sounding name and $20 price tag and people will buy it.

But that said, Calguns folks loved it with almost no exceptions...it was invented by a guy who claimed to be a SEAL, and it actually penetrated the pores of the metal. I don't think you can ask for more.
Thats the one I was thinking of. Was there any evidence he added to it or was it just coconut oil? Either way, I suppose he lost his market when people realized they could go to Walgreens to get their oil.

Frog lube is horrendous and shouldn't ever be put near a gun. "Calguns loved it without an exception" is a stretch

Could fishing oil/grease be used for firearms? Yes, I'm sure they could. Would it be appropriate? Depends on what's in it. If I had no lube at all, I'd use it before running my guns dry.

I was without lube before and ended up using motor oil. Not Mobil One or any other synthetic, but just plain motor oil. Worked perfectly fine in my handguns. My M4 also ran perfectly fine with the motor oil, but I did end up with more carbon in the bolt carrier assembly and the top of the upper receiver.

If you are looking to use reel oil as a cost saving method, you could try another low cost solution, pick up a quart of 0w20 Mobile One synthetic motor oil. For 8 bucks, that would last a stupid long time.

Another option is to go to Oreilly Auto. They now stock Lucas Extreme Gun Oil in 1 oz bottles with a handy applicator needle for only $5.95 That's pretty inexpensive compared to what you would pay in a gun store and it's formulated specifically for guns. You can save even more by purchasing Lucas Extreme Gun Oil in 4 oz or 8 oz containers and use them to refill your 1 oz containers.

I love Frog Lube, AKA track lube. I use it on my garage door rails, smooth as butter.

Picked up a quart of 5w40 last night after watching this video. I will drown my BCG in motor oil in my next range trip.

Stick to gun oil... unless CA's banned THAT, too.

I have some cals reel grease. Never thought of using it, I dont see why it would not work. I clean everything after every shooting session so its not like its for long term lubrication. Give it a shot haha

I've been using Penn grease on all my guns for years.

If you are interested in a free education on lubrication, down load this Army Corp of Engineers manual and read the first couple of chapters.

                        EM_1110-2-1424. Lubricants and Hydraulic Fluids

No one is educating us on lubricant technology. Instead what you have been taught is nonsense. As Noam Chomsky has said "the purpose of advertising is to create ill informed consumers who make irrational decisions"
