    So help me here...

I just am curious why folks would want a pinned AK over an SKS
I readily admit that I am a fan of the SKS, but I see no advantage (and plenty of disadvantage) to having an AK that needs to be broken down to reload vs the SKS.
I'm willing to bet that the 2 are very close, reliability wise and with my admittedly limited experience with the AK I have seen that the SKS is a tad more accurate.
I also understand the "stick it to the man" reason for buying the AK's, heck I bought several OLL's just because of that.
However I'll add that the AR platform is accurate for varmint and target shooting which don't require fast reloads. I've never heard of AK's being used for bench-rest shooting

I also don't know how easy to convert the AK from fixed mag to detacheble for those out of state trips.

    Sooo...

What am I missing in this debate? If you just want an AK then more power to you and I wish you well, but I guess where I'm ultimately going here is that here in the state of California, is there any "tactical" advantage to having a pinned AK over an SKS?

    Pinned, no.

    Gripless drop-mag, yes.

I have SKSes and AKs - the reasons you've cited are precisely why I feel no attraction to a pinned mag build.

Your reasoning is just like mine. i'd rather have an SKS over an AK here in cali. I hate pinned mags (not counting the SKS), that is why I made the SRB. After owning a Fab-10 for a couple years you grow to hate loading it. Not having a pistol grip is a small price to pay for using my 30rd mags.

I checked out the ca ak. is the magazine fixed permanently or can I remove it if I want to go gripless?

            1. Some people just need an AK to make their firearms collection more complete. It is an historically significant rifle.

            2. Some are hoping that their AK will be listed as an assault weapon so it can be registered with CalDOJ and then converted to normal configuration.

            3. Some are buying them to get one before the next federal ban, so they can eventually convert them to normal configuration upon moving out of California in a few years.

            4. Some are buying them just to piss off CalDOJ.

I also don't get why someone would go pinned mag when they can get a Saiga stock/trigger group and go with detachable mags. Personally I think the AK looks marginally more evil than the SKS, and that could be a reason for people liking it more.

I got 4 SKS rifles, registered AW Ak-47 and AR-15, And am still building 5 OLL ak style rifles in different configurations, and a PSL, and OLL Stag. But I am an addict.

How could you own and AR in your collection and not have it's counterpart, the Kalashnikov? It just seems right.

Of course the AK's come in many different varieties and calibers, which makes it a better platform than the SKS. Nothing wrong with the SKS though.

Well for one reason ones opinion of a AK/SKS's quality might not be to high.

Lets say if I had the choice of a FN FAL or a AK/SKS I would pick the FN FAL hands down.

and even though I have a lot of firearm storage capacity I have no interest in collecting what I feel is a cheaply made weapon.

On the other hand I feel the Galil is a beautiful and well made rifle.
SO there is my concession to AK ownership.

Keep in mind I made a valiant attempt to be nice about this so I don't expect to get flamed over my opinion of the AK/SKS series rifle.

                      Never
My main love for SKS's is due to their price & reliabilty
$1000 gets me 3-4 rifles and 2-3K rounds
A great way to cheaply outfit your family
                      My preference is the M1A.
but for teotwaki, SKS's would be great as defensive or trade weapons.
That said-- If you prefer AK's, AR's or whatever then its all cool with me, just get out there and have fun shooting.
