Always wanted a Walther P-38, partly because I'm a 9mm shooter, and because it is a design that led the way to modern SA/DA pistols. Also because they shoot very well. They're C&R now, but don't tell anyone.

20mm Oerlikon with the shoulder braces would be cool. Maybe an old 60mm mortar to fool around with..Comment

One Firearm You've Never Owned: Colt M16A2
Because: It's not legal in commie-fornia
But Still Want Badly If: I move my *** somewhere that one could use a good homeAnyway...here's a dearth of reasoning to ponder: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Guns

There are times when time travel would be nice though.Have that one. 1961.
I wanted an M1 carbine when Andrews Sporting Goods had them for $99.
Had a wife,two kids and a mortgage.
No extra money for fun.
Now, I still have a wife, kids are grown and out and still have a mortgage.
The price now is crazy if you can find one.
Choices made can be difficult but we make them.
Go back. Pick some up at "yesterday's" prices. Bring 'em forward and appreciate them.
I can think of a few guns that I and others thought were expensive (they were, for that day) and passed on. Given the prices now...
They still fall into the "like to have" category; but, as you say, choices were made and, over time, you (mostly) learn to live without regret.Comment

'60s vintage Colt Gold Cup and Browning High Power. The finish on these guns was exquisite. Just never had the opportunity & $$$ come together.
Berreta M9. When we transitioned from the 1911 I loved everything about the M9 except the caliber. Really have no idea why I don't own one. Something I wanted more always seemed to come up."He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.
You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."

"Is there a specific firearm you've never owned, just "had to have," but never had the opportunity and/or the price was never right?"
I could go on a list of NFA firearms, since I'm out of CA, but I guess I'll focus more on the regular stuff.
I think at this point the winner for my quote on quote "have to have, but the opportunity/cost is never right" award would have to go to me pretty much ever buying a conventional bolt-action hunting rifle. My wish list of what I want out of one may as well be unobtanium without going to a custom gun manufacturer and paying well beyond what I would consider a reasonable price to acquire it. That, and it's just low on my priority list compared to semi-auto anything at this point.
If there was a bolt-action rifle that had:
A) A left-handed Mauser style action
B) Is chambered in 7x57mm Mauser (Yes, apparently I'm a caliber hipster that's not going to jump on the .243/.270/.308/.30-06 train anytime soon, nor is interested in opting for a more modern 7mm-08 or 7mm Rem Mag option)
C) Comes with both iron sights and a scope mount that allows use of irons with it attached
D) Comes with a 5 round magazine
E) Comes in a blued or other dark/matte finish
F) Does not have a longer than 24 inch barrel
G) Provides at least 2 MOA or better groups
&
H) Somehow manages to tick all those boxes off at or under $3K
Then I may as well proclaim I have found the Holy Grail and throw my disposable income at it. Think the closest I got to it was accidentally coming across a used Montana Rifle Company ASR rifle online that ticked off most of the boxes except it lacked iron sights and had a 3 round internal magazine for about $1.1K, but it was sold a few days before I stumbled across it.
Runner up after that would be a Luger pistol. Seems to be a never-ending case of either it's not the type I'm looking for (4inch barrel, 9mm, most of its parts matching, hasn't been refinished and hasn't lost more than a quarter of its bluing) or the price someone asks for it was just way too much to stomach for what is effectively a cool talking piece and occasional range toy.Comment

For me it's the FN M249S. I wanted one, just because. Couldn't afford it when they were available. Definitely can't afford them now that they are no longer being produced. Right now I can only dream. Who knows what the future may hold.

I didn't buy one 30-40 years ago because I couldn't afford one.
Now I could afford one but it wouldn't be worth it because I wouldn't shoot it, much less carry it.
