    Astigmatism, need a favor

Need ask a favor from our guys with astigmatisms. I have one and it's obnoxious.

Can you look through a small aperature against a bright background and describe what you see for me? Maybe looking at a well lit white appliance.

I just discovered something today and it's hard to describe but I'll do my best. Looking through a Matech sight against bright backgrounds (in my case I'm in a room with lights off looking out a window at a snowy landscape)...the open space between the inner edges of the aperture is somewhat dimmer than the very center where my eye is focused.

Like there's a small 4 to 6 moa dot of clarity in the center of my vision and everything around it is not as focused and not as bright.

The best I can equate it, is it's like looking down a tube at a small led light...where the inner walls of the tube aren't as bright or in focus the way the bulb itself is.

The better question, what does the front sight look like? Is it crips, defined and in focus?
My astigmatism requires me to use my reading glasses to keep the front sight clear. Doing so, the target is definitely blurry; but a ghost double front sight on a clear target and I miss out beyond 100yards.
If the front sight and target are both distorted, find an eye doctor that understands rifle shooting, that way you can get a prescription that fits your needs.
The biggest place my astigmatism kicks in is with my glasses and a red dot, the glasses distort the dot (opposite what I would have expected)

I know what you're saying. I see that as well, and sometimes I can't even find the marking of the optic because of it. Usually I have to take a minute or two and readjust how I am holding or sitting behind the scope to make it all work.

FSP is good to go as long as there's no worn/shiny spots on it...otherwise I have to blacken it to avoid ghosting double images. Absolutely no issues with fiber optic FSP.

The rear sight on the other hand...even with sight black or the old wooden match blackening...i get ghosting around the inner aperture, if backlit on a smaller aperture the ghosting is so bad I have a real challenge finding the center.

I can’t help with your op until tomorrow.

But I do use the peep aperture to clean up my red dot sights when target shooting.

Same here.. Use the bottom reading lens of my trifocals. Beyond all blurry.

Hey Walter. I had a chance to try your request. I’m not seeing anything like you described. But...

I do wear an astigmatic contact lens in my shooting eye. And my prescription is for reading. It doesn’t perfectly correct the red dot blur but it helps. And I can focus clearly on the front sight. It has in fact helped my target shooting with handguns, rifles and even my bow.

I’m not sure it will work with moving objects like birds or clays. But I am going to have laser surgery done as soon as this covid crap is over. I like no reading glasses that much.

Fovea blind spot. When the light level is just right it happens.

So basically you're saying the rear sight blurs out and the front sight post is clear?

A small aperture emphasizes depth of field issues. Normally our brains are making a composite image, as our eyes flick around and adjust point of focus. With a small aperture, and concentration, your eye moves less and you get a clearer version of what your eye normally sees.

Doing your experiment I get some vingetting around the edges and definitely notice that I have a very small field of in focus view, but this is sorta what I would expect.

Astigmatism varies from person to person. There's a great picture out there somewhere, of how varying types of astigmatism view a red dot (and NONE of them are PRECISELY like mine).

If you come from the land of the ice and snow, where the red dots dance, & fuzz, & glow... like I do... I'm gonna give that white stove a test. We had 6" of snow here on Tuesday - I don't wanna end up like that Russian patrol, that couldn't see the Wolverines for the trees!!!

Not to be a debbie downer but everyone's astigmatism will look different. Looking through a small peep sight may help some. Red dots, holos and fiber may work different for everyone. Have to try them all to see what works if any.

Side note Will laser fix an astigmatism? I have a HSA burning a hole in my pocket and have been thinking about laser for a while now. Need to do some research I guess and consult a specialist.

I had lasek in one eye. It did fix the astigmatism. My vision is still 20/20 in that eye after 20:years.

You should go see a 2A friendly optometrist. Each person’s eyes are different in this regard

One thing to try is to put a pinhole in a piece of aluminum foil and put that through the center of your vision in your glasses to see if that helps. The pinhole will act as a peep sight and make the front sight more in focus. And yes, I've got astigmatism too!!
