If I have an AR 15 with a monster man grip not a (pistol grip). Can I legally use 20 and 30 round magazines at the gun range in California?

As long as you don't have any other evil features on it.

All the high cap law does is restrict people from buying, importing, and creating new high capacity magazines. They're perfectly legal to own and use. (Do not use them in a fixed magazine build or you will be creating an assault weapon.)

as long as it is a detachable magazine if it is non-detachable it is an assaultweapon

No surprise - it's meant to be confusing.

              1) the term for California is 'large-capacity'; despite the logic or lack of same, the discussion is about a legal term: a magazine which can accept more than ten rounds of ammunition.

              2) Your rifle is " (1) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine "; in your case, the MMG removes one feature from the rifle, the pistol grip.

The list of features, from 12276.1, is
              A) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action
              of the weapon.
              (B) A thumbhole stock.
              (C) A folding or telescoping stock.
              (D) A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
              (E) A flash suppressor.
              (F) A forward pistol grip.
If you have "A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine", adding any of the listed features creates an 'assault weapon' - the magazine capacity is not relevant.

              Thus, the replies
yes... BUT only if you are running a non-collapseable stock and no flash suppressor

As long as you don't have any other evil features on it.
mean that any detachable magazine of any capacity is fine with a 'featureless' rifle.

The 'capacity' issue appears with a different 'assault weapon' definition: "(2) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has a fixed magazine with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds."

Bullet Button equipped rifles do not have, legally, 'detachable magazines', so they can have all of the things on the list of 'features'. HOWEVER, they must not use large-capacity magazines, or they become 'assault weapons' under definition (2).

Wow!!! What a mess. Ok so I can use a rifle with a Hi Cap magazine as long as I do not have any evil items. The one evil item I can have is the detachable Hi Cap magazine. But I cannot purchase a hi cap magazine from anyone in Ca. So if I walk into a gun range with an ar 15 fixed stock and a monster man grip. I can have a 30 rnd magazine filled with 30 rounds of ammo and not have to worry about any law enforcement agency harassing me.

You need to have owned the magazines pre-ban, or found them in a dumpster post-ban.
