    Older Simmons scope question

It's a model 1022T 3X9 made in Korea-later models were made in China. Yes, I get that the model number was to entice the Ruger 10/22 market but this scope wound up on my new to me Marlin .22 Original Golden 39 M lever action built in 1972.
It came with a two screw detachable green solution filled bubble. What is it's purpose?-it fits well and blued similar to the tube. After market add on?

    It's just a bubble level.

Since there is an offset between the scope axis and the bore axis, you'd want the rifle to be "level" when shooting so any "shift" would be in the vertical axis, not the horizontal. At least that's my take on it.

I have my own techniques for dialing in different sights, since there will "always" be a little offset due to where and how sights are attached vis a vis the bore axis.

I try to have the "side to side" (horizontal) dialed in, as it's easier to make a "vertical" adjustment by instinct. Unless you're shooting "gangsta style" (with a rifle?!), then it only matters how "gangsta" you look while shooting anyway...

Good observation but what is it's purpose?

It is a way to check that you are holding the rifle scope level. If you cant the gun out of level it will make your shot move in the direction it is tilted toward. Can also be used off a rest to sight in the scope. JMO

as others have mentioned it is simply a bubble level to verify that there is no cant while shooting it... the only problem is that it is mounted wrong, it should be mounted on the other side of the turrets - it doesn't do any good if you have to lift your head to see it

Interesting-where you see it placed, that's the way it came to me.

                great rifle - congrats!

I'm a big fan of vintage scopes - if you decide to sell I'll give you a good price

and not to dissuade you from keeping it, but if it were me, I'd put that simmons on a vintage ruger and find a vintage weaver or tasco for that marlin

unfortunately these are rare-ish and don't turn up often (and sorry I can't part with this one) but this would be super delicious on your model 39 if you can find one

on a 1975 model 783, the one below it is a first year 1971..

I started out with nothing - and I still have most of it
