Dad is "Moving" back to California

My parents did a lot of motor home travels and officially changed their residence from California to South Dakota in 2009. Now they are changing residency back to CA, and my dad is wondering if he needs to register some handguns (and a shotgun) here.

The first two handguns he actually purchased at gun stores here in California in the early 1970's. One is a Ruger .22 Single Six, the other is a S&W Air Weight .38 Special CTG. We are wondering if these automatically registered at time of purchase way back then?

The third handgun was purchased in 2018 at an FFL in South Dakota, where they do not "register" handguns, but there is a record of sale. It is a 9mm M&P Shield 2.0, which we're hoping is on the CA roster. So how can we verify if it is on the roster? And if it isn't, what exactly can he do with it?

Last is a Hawk 982 12 gauge shotgun that he also got in 2018 through an FFL in South Dakota. Does this need to be registered here? He actually got three of these, gifted one to me and one to my brother, and we did the appropriate transfer between family paperwork.

He wants to be able to purchase ammo for all these back here in CA. I think he would just need to register the M&P Shield and shotgun, then he can buy ammo for any caliber he wants, correct?

    Thanks for any advice.

he needs to buy an bunch of stuff before he returns... the cheapest, would probably be to just buy a crap ton of 1911 frames or

if he already owns it the roster does not apply to him

No I won't bring up why in the world would you move back here to the peoples republic. Last week I came back from a house hunting trip in Nevada. Just glad for you to see him more often.
Take me on and you take on the whole trailer park!

Has your dad been drinking? What on God's green earth would drive him to come back here especially if he's retired? If he wants to have his pockets looted by the corrupt politicians here, then by all means.

He can bring all that stuff back with him. The roster doesn't apply. You should have him buy whatever pistols both of you want and bring them back with him.

IIRC, he can't however, bring back full auto, suppressors, mag fed semi-auto shotguns unless converted to single shot, AR pistols unless maglocked, certain AR's that are banned by name, and AR's must be made Kali compliant. I may have also forgotten a thing or two.

He can buy whatever ammo he wants here if he can find any. There are no proof of caliber ownership requirements (yet).

The best solution however, would be for you to move to him rather that him moving back to Kalifornistan to be near you.

Yeah, just live "officially" in the motor home parked next to your house. Then he can bring in whatever guns that aren't "assault". No residence change, no registering. Maybe.

They should spend every penny they have on guns before moving. Tell them you will disown them if guns aren’t literally falling out the windows of the motor home when they arrive.

Any handguns he purchased as a CA resident are already registered.
He need to register the post 2014 long guns and any handguns that he purchased outside CA.
He should also get a few any off-roster handguns he might ever want before he comes back and becomes a CA resident.

11 years seems an awfully long time. For how long does one have to change occupancy to then come back with an arsenal? Is there a statute?

Has to be more than 6 months to be able to claim residency in most states and especially to claim you are NOT a resident of CA anymore.

I think we got most of the info we were looking for, and a lot were weren't

Once he gets officially changed back to CA resident, has a new CA driver's license, and submits registration for any out of state items, what is required for him to start buying ammo here?

BTW, many motor-homers change their "official" residence to SD to avoid CA dmv fees and state taxes on large items, while keeping their actual home here. Not saying that's what my dad did

And if CA found out about it, they would go after them for back taxes because CA would still consider them a CA state resident. My mom did this and got caught. She lost her house to pay the back taxes.
Anyone can look around and see the damage to the state and country inflicted by bad politicians.

A vote is clearly much more dangerous than a gun.

Why advocate restrictions on one right (voting) without comparable restrictions on another (self defense) (or, why not say 'Be a U.S. citizen' as the requirement for CCW)?

... to a nursing home. CLEARLY he has dementia, wanting to move his residency BACK to CA.
