For most handguns shooting 9mm or slower bullets, barrels will last lifetime. as long as frame isn't cracked, just replace wear items are springs, extractors, etc. as needed

Take extra time to evaluate any used aluminum frame handgun like Beretta 92, Sig P2xx series etc. Those can in fact wear prematurely if they are run dry, the rails can become galled.

^^^^ True, I noticed a silver wear spot on the upper rail of a Sig P229 frame. It's tiny but it's a bad sign. Gun is from 97. Other wise a Great gun, but it needs grease now to protect the rails and I'll probably have it restored to protect it as I have no intention of selling it. Not even worth asking about round count. At the rate that an average shooter shoots, the barrel will last generations.

Old timer showed his fast barrel test trick. Simply insert a projectile in the business end of the barrel to see if its shot out...

Welcome, Any well made gun will probably outlast you if it is properly cared for. I have a Berreta I bought used over fifty years ago and it still runs like new. If you take care of it it will take care of you.

The 92sf has a long life time. Many have 5k rounds thru them and are still tight. Mossberg medium value Pump. Will last thousands of rounds with proper maintenance same with any firearm maintenance is the key.

5k? That's break-in & " get to know you" number for a Beretta. 1985 testing by US military found the MTBF (mean time before failure) to be 35,000 rounds.

As for Glocks, Chuck Tayor has fired over 250,000 rds of 9mm thru one of his Glock G17s, and it's still GTG.

Mossberg 500 has been in nonstop production since 1960. No idea what the round count life is, but I suspect the OP will never reach it.

My buddies competition 2011 has 300k+ rounds through it. He has replaced the barrel and fire control parts a few times.
I would buy it in a heart beat.

Barrel wear is your biggest indicator. The more precise the weapon, the sooner barrel wear shows on your target.

Lots of good comments in this thread. Likely you will see the joke that most guns for sale have "less than 200 rounds". I am planning to sell a few firearms and I started thinking about this. Funny enough, those that are going to get sold probably have between maybe 50 and 300 rounds through them. They just don't get shot and I can't really see me wanting to keep them. Some are meticulous about round count tracking, seems silly for me to try since I'm too lazy to be that detailed.

That said, many will attest to thousands and thousands of rounds through many-years-old military Berettas. Those things rattle like a spray can but still shoot! This is not to mention the 40 year old M16's that I don't think have ever had the barrels changed. They see many, many rounds through them, including burst fire and occasionally tracers. Also rattle like crazy but still accurate enough to hit pop up targets at 300m with iron sights. I think if a gun has many thousands of rounds through it, it might need some springs changed, just maybe a new barrel depending on caliber, and then you're like new again.

Glock had bad frame rails for a few batches.... So if you are buying a Glock - avoid the impacted serial numbers.

learn how a gun wears with round count.. holster wear.. bluing wear... polished spots from wear...

An analogy

You can learn to inspect used cars- look for repaint and common issues...
So learn to spot wear and issues on guns in general...


You can also learn what cars use turbo style pistols that squirt oil on the pistols... if people skip oil changes, the ports clog, pistons overheat and fail...

So you learn about a specific model and research that model to find out if they have problems....



overall- modern guns work well and last a very long time.... most guns get ruined from rust long before they are worn out from use

Its rare to find a gun thats broken in or that has even been shot on here. Look at the ads. >95% of the guns are new or "less than 500 rounds" haaha. The running joke, I mean the trend of selling here seems to be 500 rounds old. There's a much higher chance of finding effed up stipple jobs or slapped together "custom" things than there is a gun with any wear on it on here.

As said before, decent guns respond to usage pretty well. But there are lemons. I've seen guns of all makes and models including Beretta, Glock, and Sig's last many years and I've also seen them die within days. Nothing special about guns. It's just another mass produced piece of gear. There's a lot of good ones and less bad ones out there.
