yes, i have a registered 80% gen 3 frame and will modified it with a gen 4 upper. Also, have added a lower support under the front slide. The Serial number metal wont be touched and using a Gen 3 conversion recoil spring. the only thing is, i will have two different serial number for upper and lower.

Currently, there is no legal method for a non-exempt person to self-make a CA legal semi-auto pistol from an 80% polymer.

This is due to no commerically available 80% polymer has the CA mandated 3.7oz of type 17-4 PH stainless steel embedded into the polymer in such a manner that removal will significantly damage or destroy the receiver/frame.

Self-made firearms can only be modified within 30 days of receiving the CA DOJ marking info.

If modified, it's final configurations with pictures must be updated with CA DOJ BOF within that 30 day window.

If you self-made a 80% recevier/frame and did nothing with it before the 30 days expired, then it needs to remain configured as a receiver/frame while in CA.

Modifying it after the 30 days, is considered making a "new" self-made firearm and requires another USNA submission.

It is not legal to self-make an unsafe handgun.
^To not be an unsafe handgun, the self-made semi-auto pistol will need a chamber load indicator, magazine disconnect mechanism, and microstamping array.

Because there are a lot of gen 4 parts kits out there and no good avenue to get a gen 4 frame in CA. But you CAN get an 80% gen 3 frame. Which would set up the question being asked. I ended up with a gen 4 parts kit a while back with no good avenue to get a gen 4 frame in state. I would have asked the same question but ended up doing my homework and realized that getting a gen 3 frame to work is kind of a pain so I just got rid of the parts kit.
