Panoche Hills

Does anyone know if Panoche Hills is open? Normally Oct. 15 they open but last year they didn't open due to fire hazard.
Thinking about going down but don't want to waste gas if not opened.

They mention they are closed to vehicle traffic, but don't specifically mention shooting restrictions. Last year, shooting didn't open up until mid December, after substantial rain.

Tumey Hills/ Panoche areas are not shady There are no trees at all and shady characters can show up anywhere but are not the norm. it's too far for most lowlifes to be willing to travel.

If you want to get in when its closed, offer to do a clean up. They will want your name and the names of people going in with you, BUT... they will give you the combination to the gate and you can own the box canyon at the back of the area. We go early, shoot till about 3 and spend an hour or two picking up the crap that the idiots leave behind. We pile the bags by the pit toilets and they come in and haul them away.

i never saw a BLM officer any of the times we were out there but I always got an email by the Tuesday after we were there thanking me and my pals for the work we did and saying we were welcome out there anytime we wanted to do it again, which we did several times.

Quit ruining our secret...

I have a life long friend that lives in Panoche...we go there all the time...when open. Great place to shoot and have never had any issues. The one bad thing, like most places, is that aholes leave crap all over so we always end up with more crap when leaving than when we get there.

Panoche opened this past Friday (11/13). I was there on Saturday and was surprised to see/hear only one other group. Granted, it’s a large place and there were likely others but I usually see more traffic then I did.

We were visited by a couple rangers, which is a first for me out there, but it was a pleasant conversation and mostly them admiring our collection (they were especially fond of my M1 Garand).

It was a beautiful day and it was great to be out there again.
