A big bore lever-action rifle, like the Marlin 1895? Lots of fun to shoot, more fun for reload, and just in case there is a T-Rex outbreak. The .45-70 Government also has a long piece of history.

I have three Marlin 1895’s. My favorite is the Marlin 1895CBA (18.5" tapered octagon barrel, polished blued finish, American black walnut straight-grip stock.) And yes, the build quality is great, I think Marlin puts in extra love when making the CBA.

Seems like with the mini 14 on there twice...
Long range opens up a bunch of other cans of worms like reloading, scopes, correct environment readings...which necessitates equipment.
Historical examples never end once you get started, soon you'll want black powder too...

This is my vote, I have a R92, and the grin factor is off the charts! I'm looking into a another when it quiets down some.

I mainly use my weapons for range fun, training courses, and home defense if needed. Any thoughts?

UNLESS you already have a buttload of .308 ammo, and AR-10 mags... in the SHORT term, stick to what you know & have.

2 is 1 and 1 is none. You can't have too many AR's, as the best set of spare parts, is ANOTHER AR.

I’d consider a pistol caliber carbine. Or a scoped bolt action in 6.5 CM.

Or leave the space for a bunch of handguns, if you don’t have any yet.

I already have a M1A, DDM4V11 (fixed magazine), Benelli M4, Ruger 10/22, complete featureless lower (that I put my DD upper on when I want to go featureless), and Beretta A400 (for sporting clays). That leaves me 1 more long gun since the featureless lower doesn't take up a space.

A short, light, handy and powerful rifle that's easy (with practice) to hit with through 300 yards, though the gun and the cartridge is capable of greater distances:

A Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle chambered in .308 Winchester. With it's composite stock, these weigh a hair under 7 lbs and can be carried all day. Features include terrific ghost-ring iron sights, a picatinny rail for an intermediate eye-relief, low-power scope or perhaps a red dot sight, detachable box magazine in either 3, 5, or 10-round capacity and a proven, controlled-round-feed Ruger M77 action.

You have .223/5.56 firearms already. Do this instead. You will never regret this option.

The second choice should be the Marlin in .45-70. There are several configurations and all are amazing firearms.

As mentioned already, a lever action or an M1 Carbine would be a nice addition to a long gun collection. I've had a Winchester Model 94 and an Underwood 1944 M1 Carbine for many years. I recently purchased a Henry Big Boy in .45 Colt and an Auto Ordnance M1 Carbine and I'm very happy with both. They were each well below $1000.

But! I also agree with elSquid's post: Leave the slot open for now, continue your research and wait until a firearm and chambering reaches out to you, figuratively speaking. You'll know.

Lightweight bolt rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor. Good for hunting and range.

You listed mini 14 twice. I think you know the answer.

It just seems like a fun gun to shoot, like the big brother of the 10/22. Ive always wanted one but they seem expensive. kicking myself for not buying one back in 2016 when turners used to occasionally list them for $699 (or was it $599), cant remember) on their Wednesday deal.
