Packing on a long road trip

    Hey all,

Just wondering what types of setups you're running when you need to travel on the road for a long trip. Pistol? Long gun?

I've seen a lot of console safes and other methods. Curious as to what people have and what they like.

I've been looking at the Lock'r Down console safe with the electronic pushbutton lock. Seems pretty secure and reliable as long as you keep fresh batteries in it.

    Stay safe out there!

You could get a multi state and use it outside of Ca

I have and use the Lock R Down console safe, not just for my CCW pistols, but Ham HT's, Cameras, and my wife's wallet.

I went for the 4 digit combo lock version.

We use it every time we travel.

Great to hear! I heard it's built a lot better than the Console Vault.

Good point. That's something I hadn't looked into.

But as far as California goes, I'm thinking more of just a gun vault type of thing unless you feel the need to have something immediately and I'm open to suggestions

Something secure yet accessible. You never know what you will encounter cruising down I5...

In Ca, without a CCW, carry your pistol unloaded / empty mag well in a lockable briefcase (Hartman cases have one lock/latch) with several full mags in the same unlocked briefcase. In a emergency, access pistol and a full mag, lock and load. If yiu are about to be pulled over on a T stop, make sure you spin the lock before you pull over. The briefcase needs to be locked only if inspected by a LEO.

                From the CHP website;

California law does not recognize concealed weapon permits from other states; therefore, they would not be held valid. If you wish to transport a handgun during your California visit, it should be carried unloaded in a locked container. In the absence of a suitable container, you may secure the unloaded handgun in the locked trunk of a passenger car. Ammunition may be kept in the same container or trunk, but the handgun must remain unloaded with no rounds in the cylinder and no loaded magazines in the magazine well.

I went with the Lock'r Down option. It's pricey but it's made really well. And the fit and finish are worth it.

Will I leave my firearm in it overnight? Absolutely not. But driving down I5 or any other stretch of highway on a long road trip is a little more secure now.

                    ^ ^ ^ I really like that vault. I want one. ^ ^ ^

But there may be an issue with California's "not in the center console or glove box" placement of handguns.

Which will not be an issue for you out of state. Depending on the state, of course.

                    Safe travels! sir.

This is what I found on CA Penal Code Section 16850:

Pursuant to California Penal Code section 16850, the term "locked container" means a secure container that is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment.

So what is the "utility compartment"? It does not say center console. Maybe if the officer sees that this is not the OEM center console and it is a securely locked metal container? Of course, that's splitting hairs I guess. And subject to interpretation. Sometimes it's better not to test the system...

                      **sigh**

get AZ or UT ccw if you can't get a cali one.

something is better than nothing......other wise move to a better sheriff's county

remember long guns don't have to be locked, can't be loaded but mags can be next to it.....

Wow, that is a nice safe. I usually carry a single stack 9mm and have it in a gunvault safe with a cable attached to the frame of the seat.
