In my experience, when folks suddenly disappear, and signs point away from something catastrophic (death) -- i.e., folks appear to be living at the same residence, receiving voicemails (but not returning them), and not returning email, it means they do not want to communicate. Chief will resurface when he's ready.
I had this happen with an employee (and friend) who very suddenly disappeared. As it turns out he had much bigger issues to deal with besides returning my calls.
At this point you just have to trust that (absent his house being burned down) that he's got his hands full -- and not let personal curiosity overcome concern for his well being.
