Keeping receipts

So I recently sold a pistol via a PPT through an FFL.

Do I need to keep a copy of the transfer paperwork?

I assume, yes it’s a big assumption, that the serial number of that pistol is no longer linked to me, so if there are any issues, I won’t be flagged.

Or is everyone just paranoid the CAL-DOJ is incompetent and assume they will get it wrong and one must prove the pistol was legally transferred?

I wouldn’t worry, you can always do a no longer in possession form on the doj site if you are worried. I have read threads on here where guys have found that guns they no longer own have still shown up on the list they do via doj.

Fill out a No longer in possession paperwork with the DOJ at your FFL. It's like a release of liability when you sell a car.

You don't need to keep the paperwork if you don't want to. The fact that you even have the paperwork means that the transfer went through the DOJ system without any issue. There is still a history of owners, but you are no longer the current owner.

Correct. It is not necessary to keep the paperwork for proof or liability reasons. It is in the new owners name now. You will always be listed when it is looked up, but not as current owner. It is not necessary to file a no longer in possession if the sale was done in california. The dros did that for you already.

AFS records will still show your name in the record. It will not have you listed at the top. Your name is forever linked to that gun there is no way to change that. AFS is a historical record, of the transactions completed through a dealer for the particular firearm.

If someone was to run the serial number of the model 66 I traded in for my 586 way back in the 80's, my name will still be on the list of transactions for that gun.

I personally don't worry about keeping receipts or DROS copies. Do I trust the system or more accurately the people running it? Hell no, but I did my part legally.

Keep all your paper receipts AND store them as digital files in multiple locations. Ink fades with time. It took 25 years but the receipt for the first firearm I purchased is no longer legible.

I agree. But at some point you do need to thin them out.

Mine got thinned when I moved last year. They went back to 1976. I did find my Playboy Club card. Sure wish I had found my Gaslight Club key.
