Why you must clear before cleaning a gun

Guy at work, new pistol (Kaltec 9mm) pulled the magazine and thought it was empty. It was not. The round was dug out of the top of his dresser. The hot gases did more damage than the bullet because the barrel was pressed tight the the palm trying to remove the slide. No bones were hit and all fingers work fine. He told me it did not really hurt that bad. HE WAS LUCKY.

Wow. He is lucky that was all that happened. Even if I am 100% positive the gun is empty I still check.

Sucks that the guy shot himself, but it could have been a lot worse. This is just another pleasant reminder of why we need to use firearms safety at all times.

1st rule is CLEAR YOUR WEAPON! Rinse and repeat!

Let this be a reminder folks lol.. Sorry about your friend and thanks for sharing your story, I almost made that same mistake once, and will never ever do it again, now EVERY single time I pick up a weapon the fisrt thing I do is make sure the chamber is clear..

I haven't purchased a Glock yet (in a week or so that will be different) but I was under the impression that you had to pull the trigger to remove the slide. That's the way it works on my XD, and I had been told the same was true for a Glock (I know it's true for the Glock clone, S&W Sigma).

The guy's still an idiot (a very, very LUCKY idiot) but it's not unreasonable that he had to pull the trigger to clean it.

Remember: Pull the mag, and rack rack rack rack rack and then rack the slide one more time. Don't be sure- be stupid sure!
