    Sun Welding...safes

I'm looking to buy a modest (<$1000) gun safe. A local gun shop has about 1/2 dozen safes made by Sun Welding located in Simi Valley. I called them but they said I had to go through a dealer (my local gs). Anyone have any opinions based on first hand dealings with these safes? Thanks in advance.

I don't have any input regarding the safes you mentioned. However I would recommend that you do some craigslist searches as there are some nice safes that pop up there. I picked up a beautiful Browning safe there and wouldn't have been able to touch one otherwise simply because of the cost.

I second that, check craigslist. 4 years ago i bought 2 large safes from my work, they used them to hold the shotguns and Glocks for the Security Team. They havent been used in a few years, the combo's were lost, but the doors were locked open. I bought them for $100 each, figured out the combo's and sold them for $400 each on CL, they sold very fast.

To the OP, I sometimes carry safes made by Sun Welding, and I use them for handgun storage at the shop. They are very well built. For <$1K, you are probably NOT getting a fire-rated safe, just so you are aware.

I have one that is 25+ years old and everything still works.

I just ordered a safe, and most likely from the same GS you were in, they will make it any way you want it, color of krinkle black (this is the standard finish), they are a very good safe and fire rated too. you have your choice of dial or keypad depending on how much you want to spend if it is not on the floor it takes about 3-4 weeks for them to get it in.

Thanks to all. Last year I got massive viruses from "My Space" so I am VERY leary of websites such as Craig's List or E-bay or whatever. The Renegade is big enough for my modest collection and is fire reated to 1200 degrees for 30 minutes. But fire is not my main concern. Looks like that is the way I'll go.

Well it might be ok now, but what about the future. When I bought my safe, I figured that a safe that could hold 14 guns would be enough. It took me less than a year to find out that I was wrong.
Don't buy a safe just for what you have now. Get the biggest that you can get, because you will add more or you will put other stuff like important papers and other things that will take up space also.
Did I mention get the biggest safe that you can afford?
