If you saw someone shooting into the air...

2 guys with family in tow were having a 12g competition. Throwing clay into the air. The other dude had an AR and they all thought he was hitting the clay. I raised my hand for a cease-fire, asked them if they knew what was behind the hill and gave them my 12g pump to play with. In the last 3 months I've seen this happen 3 times now with people using handguns and rifles to shoot flying clay.

Behind the hill are farms, ranches and hunting areas and a road that leads to the shooting area. He said he wasn't even thinking and thanked me for reminding him...

    Well done
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
    (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

I don't think they would even know if they hit it with a .22 caliber bullet.
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

And we wonder why some folks advocate for the closing of shooting ranges, etc.

not shooting ranges, but open shooting spots in the wild.

a regulated shooting range wouldn't have even allowed this to happen as the RSO would have stopped them before the first shot.

I might've tackled him first. REALLY hard.

This goes on every night in several areas of Los Angeles, sans clay pigeons.

Those .223s can travel miles. Idjit to shoot centerfire or even rimfire in air if you do not know what is downrange.

Near Beal AFB. I know for a fact that there are ranches with cows, farmhouses and homes. It is sparse and the chances of someone getting hit would be like winning the lotto, but people (except me) win every day...

I'm not sure I would have made it out a alive with his friends there all armed if I tried to tackle someone at a shooting range.

Good job thinking of safety for the surrounding area, what goes up also comes down. I'm not sure I would loan my gun to folks I don't know.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...
