Lots of videos online showing the actual results with different brand and rating safes.

Some you think wouldn't last do very well, and some that look like they could withstand a nuclear bomb may as well be made of Cheddar.

Put your papers inside a smaller fire safe, inside that safe. It will also protect them from water should there be a fire and it gets hosed down by the hose heads.

So the safe may last but if things become hot enough they will auto ignite such as paper documents and Wood stocks. While the actions and barrels will still be usable. Friend of mine found out in the 03 fires. Safe was good along with jewelry but documents were ash.

I remember pics of safes from some of the wildfires a few years ago. Wasn't much left inside. Of course they probably burned for quite some time. But those fires are HOT!

Safes are designed to last long enough for the fire department to get there and start fighting the fire and reducing the overall heat. That is why those in the wild fires did not fare so well. They are not built to sit in a fire for hours with 1300 degree temps. So in a typical house fire the fire department can start working on putting it out in 10-15 minutes.

GREAT idea! ALSO protects the RST of the inside of the safe, should they ignite... although if it's THAT hot, everything else might well be... ahem... TOAST, as well.

Good fire ratings/safes are designed a bit different than a good ole fashioned security safe. They seal different, usually have different locking/hinge systems and are made to hold the interior temp below the flashpoint of paper.

Placement of the safe can help too. In a corner up against concrete walls on two side/bottom with air space around the top in my case to help with content security. As mentioned, a second small fire safe inside for some things may help.

May be work installing a fire sprinkler in the closet or room.

A locksmith/safe cracker friend told me it is a big mistake storing ammo in a safe, because it cooks off at a much lower temp. than the point where paper, wood, most plastics, and paint starts to burn. When the ammo cooks off, it ignites everything else, and the contents are usually destroyed

Lol. It would add extra time to the rating he already has on the safe. And extra half hour can mean a lot in a fire.
