Pelican 1700 / Storm iM3100 / Other?

I'd like to buy a case to transport my pending AR, and I've narrowed it down to a couple of choices.

Pelican 1700:
- Exterior dimensions: 38.12" x 16.00" x 6.12"
- Interior dimensions: 35.75" x 13.50" x 5.25"
- Empty Weight: 16.98 lbs

Storm iM3100
- Exterior dimensions: 39.8" x 16.5" x 6.7"
- Interior dimensions: 36.5" x 14.0" x 6.0"
- Empty Weight: 15.2 lbs

Both cases have similar features (wheels / locking ability / warranty), but I'd like to get some opinions prior to purchase.

Also, if there is another case I should consider, please let me know.

I have used both brands of cases working Events & Trade shows when shipping Computer Equipment, AV, Product prototypes, etc...
I trust the Storm/Hardigg more than the Pelican. I like the latches better on the Storm/Hardigg and they do seem just a fraction more durable.
In all my shipping I have never had a Storm/Hardigg break, but I have had a Pelican lose a wheel, and another one come back to me with a broken latch.

I have a few of the smaller storm cases for hand guns and have zero complaint about the build quality, durability, and functionality of the case. They work very well and are stackable.

big fan of the Pelican.. that is what I use & have used since day 1. I would buy another in a heart beat (and likely will for my in progress build). durable, proven, great foam easy to cut (I do not like the baffled foam like in the above SKB), water proof, lockable.. hard to beat

I'd say it comes down to features and price. Both are strong, sturdy, well-proven brands, and you really can't go wrong with either one. I've used a variety of smaller Pelican cases for years to ship equipment around, and it holds up very well. I haven't tried Hardigg, but lots of people like them.

If you're not going to be doing any challenging transport (like hauling stuff to the range), there are lots of less expensive cases that will do fine, but if you're going to transport fine firearms on airlines, for instance, I'd stick with the well-proven brands.

I generally like the latches on the Storm cases more than the Pelican. FWIW, I've had Tundra, then Pelican cases going back 20 years. Now Storm cases are my first choice, then Pelican. But my AR is in a Pelican that works beautifully. Sounds like a toss-up.

Check out http://www.cases4less.com/ for either brand. I'm lucky that I can just drive there to pick up whatever I want at the best prices I've seen for cases. About $155 for the Storm, $159 for the Pelican, both with foam.

Wow they do have good prices on Hardigg cases! I just might have to cruise by there next time I am in SoCal. Thanks for the heads up!

I just bought a 1750 and I am going to try to get my AR and 590A1 in it.

Pelican now owns Hardigg Industries. Don't know how that will affect quality and prices in the future.

I have a Pelican 1700. It's a tad small if you don't have a collapsible stock on your AR unless you transport the upper separated from the lower. The 1750 will work better if you don't have a collapsible stock on your AR.

Just bought and received a Storm Case iM3220 from cases4less.

Service was excellent (delivery within 4 days and confirmation emails were sent on time)

Price was GREAT: $240 including foam, shipping, taxes

Case quality is great: beautiful, and robust


Now I need to cut the foam to install my AICS!

i have the storm. never owned a pelican. The storm is a great case, cant go wrong.

I own many of both brands. I'm preferring the Pelicans now. The Storm cases are a bit more bendable if that makes sense? The Pelicans just feel more solid. The Pelicans also wear better and stay newer looking longer.
