Do threads EVER get deleted, or do they live FOREVER!

I noticed a lot of old threads pop up when doing a search, quite a few have "please delete" in the titles. Do threads ever get deleted or do they just live forever, lost in time somewhere on the net? I searched "please delete" and found nine pages of results. Shouldn't these be removed to keep things organized? It also would cut down on necroposting.

This morning, while reading the thread about "Missing Link or Just Another Monkey?" it was deleted. Probably forever.
