Selling a Handgun out of State

    Question for you guys.

I will be driving cross country to New York. I plan on taking a handgun with me. Question is, would I be able to sell a handgun to a gun store or a FFL in Ohio as a resident of California? If it is possible, will the gunstore or FFL in Ohio give me paperwork that the gun was sold to them? Thanks guys!

Wohhh, be very careful about that. I was told in CCW to not even think about taking handguns into NY. Look up the laws very carefully for that, they have even tougher laws about crossing state lines with handguns.

Yes it can be sold to a dealer. You may not sell it directly to a resident of another state. It must go through an FFL (federal law).

If you want it out of your name in CA, save the paperwork you receive when selling it to the dealer and submit that paperwork with a Notice of No Longer in Possession form.

That sounds like a huge pain to sell a gun in Ohio. The premium commanded by the limited number of off roster guns in CA makes selling handguns out of state pretty unprofitable most of the time. Especially now.

But transferring it at an ffl is the right answer.

Yes of course!!! I would never attempt to enter New York with a handgun or much less try and sell one to a gun store in New York. They may arrest me even though Im trying to do the right thing.

Yes, thats makes a lot of sense. Just sell it directly to a gun store or a FFL dealer in Ohio. Thank you!

They will probably give you a receipt that they purchased a gun from you. It will have the model, caliber and serial number. I doubt you'll get much else for paperwork.
Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.
