I'm curious to see what prices float around for this. I would not be shocked if it is MUCH more than a typical $100 to $200 class where 10+ people are showing up.

Two suggestions: saying you want training with a firearm is like saying you want to learn how to drive. Drive on the street, overland, autocross, track, drifting? There's many different kinds of shooting sports and training disciplines.

Second is vet your instructor. To continue that driving analogy that Driver's Ed teacher probably isn't the one who will teach you how to become the next Keiichi Tsuchiya.

I usually charge $500 per person for the day. Private range 4 to 8 hour class. You will shoot 1000-2000 rounds.

I have seen instructors that charge $150/hour with a minimum of 3-hrs.

Then seen those that charge $200/3-hrs + range fee included.

And the highest I have seen $1000/3-hrs (I won't name who and from what school)... I mean, even the Tactical Performance Center in Utah does NOT charge that much!

Also my personal opinion is based off of round count. The more rounds fired the more experience you get. So find out how many rounds are fired during the class. There is other factors to a good instructor but you should get as much as you can out of a class.

Are you against going to a group training?

I know that my usual trainer does a beginners class and he & assistants are very hands on throughout classes... I haven't done his very beginners class but many of his other classes. Sadly, not in your area.

All the santa clara county ranges are closed due to covid/fires as far as I can tell. I would imagine not much training going on at the moment. Start buying up ammo for when things resume. I think U.S. Firearms in sunnyvale offers private training and Reeds in Santa Clara has class training courses.

You could take the day of training for a hunting license. It's a classroom setting with some other attendees that will only involve "book study" and no actual shooting.

Why am I recommending this? Well, it's very inexpensive and will focus on a lot of safety and beginning fundamentals. That will get you started in the right direction and save you some money for your subsequent classes where you spend time on the range. Also, you can usually get some additional tips on where to get advanced training that suits your needs from the instructor for that class.

It's nice to see beginners that have the good sense to take some classes instead of just winging it.

Second the youtube. If I ever take a class I will have all the background info at least and not be lost and maximize shooting and motion instead of explanation time.

I would guess that there are different levels for these classes too requiring more explanation for beginners and more range time for advanced "operators". If you pick a class that has you shooting 1000 rounds of ammo, that's like $1000 just in ammo at current prices (cheaper than dirt ha ha).
