Buying Ammo After Buying New Gun Question

Hey everyone. Hope this is the best forum for this question. So I just purchased a new 1911 this past Sunday. This will be my first gun purchase at my current residence as I moved in here a year ago. I have not bought any guns in the last 5 years, let alone at my current address. I know you need to have purchased ammo at your current residence or a gun in the last 5 years.

Since I already paid and started the DROS, am I am able to go to any gun store to purchase ammo, or do I need to wait until I actually pick up the gun after the 10 day waiting period? Thanks in advance!

good question I think you have to have a purchase in the system I would buy a few boxes from the gun store to start. What did you get? With CA stupid approved rooster we cannot get a lot of nice stuff also 45 or 9mm?

OH just saw new residence for you if you bought something last 5 years in state you should be fine I think.

I have not bought anything in the last 5 years. I think it was maybe 6 or 7, plus that was at an old address.

I think it depends on if your background check has been completed. Your FFL might be able to tell you.

If it were me I would look for some ammo online at https://ammoseek.com/ find a dealer that will ship to your FFL and complete the ammo transfer when you pick up after the ten day wait. There background check will need to be complete and in the system for them to release the gun.

Buy some ammo when you pick up the 1911. After that date, you should be able to go to another vendor and buy ammo, since you now have a purchase on your AFS record.

I think since you have to wait for your firearm DROS you may need a Basic eligibility check, which costs $19 and take 10 days.

You may as well wait for your DROS to complete and then you can do the $1 Point of Sale check that takes a minute or so.

I found this somewhat helpful. https://laxammooc.com/california-ammo-laws-for-2019/

So I drove back out to the gun store since they weren’t answering the phone. They told me I have to wait the 10 days and then I can get ammo since I have a gun purchase at my new address.

I purchased some ammo with my 45, waited 10 days for the DROS to clear and was also GTG on the ammo. After that ammo was pretty simple and quick at FFLs.

You need to wait until the gun currently in DROS clears then you are good.

                      1. Treat all guns as if loaded (even when you know they aren't).
                      2. Never point the muzzle at anything you aren't willing to destroy.
                      3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target.
                      4. Know your target and what is beyond it (avoid all collateral damage).
