    Steel Shooting Questions

Whats the recommended safe distance to shoot at steel targets/plates for either rifle (.223) and handgun (.45). Also what is the recommended ammo to use FMJ? Frangible?

As far away as you can get. My buddy caught a round in the chest(7.62X54r) and the steel was at least 75 yards away.

The smart, learn from their own mistakes.
The others, well......they just never learn.

assuming the steel is in good shape, i.e. no dents cracks, etc., for pistol at least 7 yards, preferably 10. For rifles, it probably is longer, tough I don't have exact number. I'd say 100 yard is a good number.

+1 on this. As for the rifle steel, it'd better be plenty thick or the penetrator or steel cored rounds will punch right through the plate and leave a nice hole instead of going *ding*.

100 yards doesn't seem that far, maybe that's why Angeles has their first steel at 200 and there's a sand berm in front of it at 100 to help deflection.

Just don't hit it flat on. Angle the steel more than 25deg if armor quality, and at least 45deg if plate.

IPSC allows no less than 7yds .

FOr rifles the recommended minimum is 100 yards; for pistol I wouldn't go closer than 10 yards and thats if the steel is properly angled.

I would only shoot pistols at steel at 7yd with lead....FMJ's or HP's.. 25yds....

Most of the clubs I shoot pistol matches use a minimum of 10 yards. At Chabot we shoot rifle at 50 and have had no problems yet.

USPSA rules dictate no closer than 23ft, 26ft if a fault line is used, (handgun) for steel. Richmond has a club rule that the distance shouldn't/can't be closer than 30ft on top of that for additional safety.

While I was attending the FBI SWAT school, during one of the exercises, one of the instructors was hit by a bullet fragment size of 22 cal bullet. The instructor
had to go to the emergency room for surgery. The steel target was shot at about 25 yards during a full auto bail out exercise.

One of the recruits I taught was also hit by a ricocheted bullet. The flattened bullet didn't pentrate the skin, but the arm was totally bruised to a diameter of about 6 inches. The steel target was also shot at about 25 yards.

Both steel targets were angled at about 15 degrees.

Don't know why he was shooting at a pistol plate set out about 10 yrds.
But I saw a 30-30 make a bloody mess of a guys forearm...lucky it just grazied him and no one was behind him....

I think playing pool and sharpening your knowledge of geometry/physics is a good idea....knowing what is behind you target might be an angular calculaiton.
