I want to do some desert shooting- where to go ?

I'd like to take my OLL and M1A Scout to do some out-in-the-open shooting, alone and unmolested. I haven't done any since the early 90's, then driving through Sunland up the Angeles Crest Highway, through the Angeles Sate Forrest and on to a remote area on the other side of the mountain range, about an hour drive once you started up that road. Anyone know where I mean ? Where would be the closest open area to shoot from the SFV ?

I believe Jawbone also allows hunting.

Try Kern County of the 14FWY.

How far from the SFV is Kern County ? And what do you do when you cross the county line- pull over and pick a place off the road to shoot ?

There's a spot north of Mojave we used to go to. 14 North past Mojave, then take Sierra Hwy N to Randsburg cutoff. Go off road at the Aqueduct road. Anyone else ever shoot there?

I dont think you can hunt there because they have signs all over saying do not disturb the animals and to tell a park ranger if you see an animal.dead or alive

                EF,
It will take you about 2 hours or so to drive up to Jawbone from the Valley, depending on how fast you drive.

Basically you need to get off the Hwy and find an open spot to shoot, if you see any private property signs stay away from there. Same goes with certain closed areas like the Desert Tortoise area.

If you want to go more East, take the 15 North to the 40 East and get off at the Yermo Dagget exit outside of Barstow. Go right and then left and follow the road back in far enough to where you feel comfortable shooting. I would go over the first set of hills (about 3-4 miles) and then pick a spot. Don't shoot any glass, there are Rangers that patrol the area. You can go back in there further but some spots require a truck. If you want to look it up Google Ord Mountain.
