    Bunch of old guns...

Was up at a buddy's ranch a few weeks ago to help him take car of some odds and ends, move some cattle and just get away from the city. The ranch has been in his family since the 1890's. My buddy isn't much of a gun enthusiast, but told me he has a few old guns that were passed down to him from his father, uncles and grandfather. I'm new to firearms earlier this year, but was really fun checking out these old firearms. There were a bunch more (rifles and shotguns) that I didn't take pictures of. My favorite was the Winchester Model 94 .30-30 from the 1940's, pretty much the only firearm I instantly recognized. I headed out to the Local Big5 but they sadly were all out of .30-30. Would have been fun to fire that Model 94.

My friend's dad had a neighbor that got 2 of those 30-30s from the neighbor's estate sale. Now they have matching Winchesters but were both made in the 60s I think.

Cool. The Savage 99s are very nice.

Ammo for some of those are probably plentiful and not overpriced. You should get some and ask to shoot with him.

I drove out to Big5 that was the closest shop that sold ammunition to pick up some .30-30. I really wanted to shoot the Model 94, but no dice. They were out of a lot of stuff, but was able to pick up some more 20g 7.5 birdshot to have around.

I wonder how much meat those 99s and the 740 put on the table over the years.

Well, there's a bunch of deer mounted on the walls in the cabins that were taken on the ranch over the years, so I'd say quite a few!

I'm curious what are the 99's chambered in? 47 years ago I inherited my father's 99 that was chambered in 250-3000, his favorite round for bringing home the venison.

The one with the scope says 250-3000. I can't tell about the other.

Nice model 94. I have collected a few... I love all the character these old rifles have...if only they could talk...

A few years ago my brother and I ran the serial number and dated our 99 back to about 1919, 4 years after the Savage 250 cartridge was created. Not exactly sure when my dad acquired the rifle but it could have been anytime between 1919 and early 1930 as best we can tell. I'll bet your 99 is possibly a centurion as well. How's the barrel look?
