Gun registered to buy ammo?

So my friend's kid passed and got his hunting license. So we wanted to take him dove hunting.

My friend has his 20ga from when he was a kid. So to be legal we started calling around for Bismuth since its obviously an older gun.

Drive 45 minutes to Sportsman's Warehouse only to be told that you can only buy ammo for calibers you have registered in your name.

When did this start? Is this law now or a store policy?

Anyways, the retailer just transmits the background check to DOJ. Even if you have not registered a firearm in the last 5 years, you can still purchase ammo. There is a tier system of the various background check types, primarily revolving around a fee schedule.

Yeah, that's wrong. As long as you have a registered firearm that matches the information on your ID, you can buy whatever caliber and however much you want for a $1 background check.

Timeframe of when the long gun was purchased and if the address from when it was purchased and now matters.

They have been registering handguns longer than long guns. I believe 10/5 years.

So if you moved or if registration was not required when purchased, the system doesn’t know you.

They should ha ran the $1 and if denied either recommend you voluntarily register or submit to the $19 basic check which would take longer

Basically you have to have a firearm registered to your current address in your name to pass the $1 check

It is not caliber specific

$19 each time if you do not and do not wish to register

If you wish to purchase ammunition regularly, then it’s more cost effective to have one registered at the purchasers address with their name.

Quickest way is online registration. $19 2-3 days is common
Or purchase a new firearm. Cost + DROS 10 ish days

DOJ FAQ Ammo #24:The eligibility check is eligibility for purchase of any ammo. Once cleared, you can buy any amount or caliber you want, regardless of whether you own a gun in that caliber.

Handguns have been 'registered' in the DROS sense since 1924, at least those that went through CA licensed gun dealers. Most transfers have had to run through CA FFLs since 1991, so those were registered via DROS submissions. Long gun info has been collected since 2014, via DROS and all the 'voluntary' paper filed.
